Why the hell does ford need a /8 ?!?
This thread:
Why did providers horde mass amounts of IPs before depletion? It's the same with Ford, they saw an opportunity and took it.
It has nothing to do with being opportunistic. Back when Ford and other large companies were assigned their /8, that's what the government was handing out to any large organization that asked for space.
Yeah but why does Ford need a /8?
Round and round and round we go :P haha
In before someone asks why Ford has a /8.
Exactly. They asked! There are plenty of large organizations from the 80s that do not have an /8.
The 10.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/16, and 172.16.0.0/12 space wasn't always defined as private network space. It wasn't formalized in RFCs until the mid-1990s. That's one major reason why companies and universities got large blocks previously.
@Jar Also, I think this explains it?

No, they did not - Back then you either got a few /24s (Class C), a /16 (Class or a /8 (Class A) - Internic (and before that the US gov via NSF) decided what you got when you applied, you could only either request Class Cs or have them decide if you 'need' A or B.
