  • If you want a traditional forum: XenForo

If you want something simple and fresh: Discourse

  • NodeBB

    Paid software (in order): Xenforo/IPB/WoltLab/vBulletin

    Free Alternative: MyBB

  • WebProjectWebProject Host Rep, Veteran

    +1 for MyBB

  • I like vbulletin

Paid: IPB (Because it has literally every feature you need for a forum with good ux)
    Free: MyBB/NodeBB

  • discourse looks good and snappy. anyone have tried it yet?
    This one uses it
    https://community.letsencrypt.org/

  • Going to write one myself in node, Xenforo is good, bought it and found too expensive to renew, so I let it expired. IPB is costly to me so no. Tried Discuz! X but too many spaghetti code and buggy, so another no.

Still struggling with doT or react tho, since react native is out like last week.

  • Search this forum, there's a ton of recent discussions about this topic.

  • Here is my list of the best forum software, ranking from best to not-so-great:

    1. XenForo
    2. Invision Power Board
    3. MyBB
    4. vBulletin

XenForo is great just because of the frequent updates it receives and its security is pretty top notch. Invision Power Board has been known to have a few major vulnerabilities (SQL injection flaws and such), but the plugin support for the software is one that is hard to be rivaled with. MyBB is a cheaper solution if the top two are out of your price range, whereas vBulletin ranks last on my list just because I have had some issues in the past regarding the use of their software.

  • phpBB

    SMF

    FluxBB

All great free and open source software.

    This is absolutely incredible,
I suggest you use version 2.1, it seems to have the English version and multi-language support.
Use google translation look for expansion in the forum.

  • IPB is good but extremely bloated compared to other software in my experience. Hardware is cheap though...

  • What makes XenForo so popular? Because it doesn't look like much at first sight.

For me, it's far more stable and support is also OK for the price. Also there are many professional looking themes available for it.

I wondering the same but if this much people recommended it i should take a look

  • flopv said: I personally recommend vbulletin forum. It would cost initial but it is good forum.

Nice double posting. So I'd like to counteract that with my opinion. Vbulletin is broken. I avoid posting on forums that use it because anything that I've clicked on for any reason is removed from my view. Vbulletin is extremely unfriendly to users. Utter crap.

  • XF

  • The only paid software I ever used were vBulletin 3.x and IPB. Didn't really like IPB. vBulletin is ok though.

For free ones I'd certainly vote for MyBB although Flarum looks interesting but it's still in development and has little features so I won't consider it here.

  • What do you think of Muut? It is kind of a forum embed using javascript.

But by bloated, you don't mean slow, do you?

  • i love discourse, yeah its ruby and using much resource in their requirement, but it's agile and fast for forum.

  • Have used plenty of forum software including phpbb, vbulletin, simplemachines, and invision and vbulletin was the best. Have heard good things about xenforo but never used it.

  • Please no. It contains many backdoors and injection by Tencent, where some said the coughChinacough might possibly monitoring/modify the injection for their own use.

Also please notice that starting from Discuz! 7.0, there is a bundled SSO thing "UCenter" for separate user management, to unify the logins across their product lines.

Also Discuz! X3.2 is the final version, where the officials has not stated the continuous development. Either way, Discuz! is going towards a dead end after being bought by Tencent.
