Because OpenVZ allows providers to over-commit all resources (HDD/RAM/CPU) where as Xen and KVM are limited (Either by RAM or HDD).
I have seen OpenVZ systems with upto 70% oversold RAM, which is fine if its not been used. The recommended RAM over-commit level for KVM is 50%.
KVM/XEN on the other hand use more RAM just running than an idle OpenVZ box would.
Note some of the KVM offers. The high ram and the oddly low HDD space ... KVM allows overselling of RAM, but not HDD Space.
XEN is not oversold.
OpenVZ is all most allways oversold.
Is there a way to tell if node is swapping on KVM? vzfree can do it on OVZ, right?
Prometeus's current offer gives 1GB KVM for $6.25 only (if paid semi-annually). Go grab one if you are really looking for such.
Jcaleb those that oversell might charge different price. It also a sort of gimmick ( kvm node is a bit hard to manage thus most would want their clients to stay on ovz node :P)
Look at this and tell me how much ram is committed (sold) on this openvz node:
VZ is generally oversold as everyone said...
If you want to use your resource allocation 24/7 then go with a Xen VPS
Xen is more of a 'dedicated server' as you can load your own kernels.
@chrisk and kvm is even more dedicated-like
oh no you didn't
@mitgib sorry
did i do something wrong?

Sorry to say. But Bullshit. Not everyone oversolds.
Dunno
Maybe 1TB xD
Yes, everybody does xD
What about IO and processor? And network bandwidth.
Not that I can see, but if you hang around #lowendbox you'd know why I said that.

So with Xen or kvm you do not over sell io and network?

As far as I know, If you want to oversell, you can oversell with XEN and KVM as well.
RocketVps is a great example of non oversold ovz provider.
@mitgib sorry, i am usually only on #frantech
What server is #lowendbox on?
irc.freenode.net
I'm just curious because I actually have a small vps with them - how have you confirmed that?
confirmed what? That they are not oversold? From Experience.
I didn't said that. Ask the other guys.
Lol, you cant tell whether or not an OpenVZ VPS is oversold (Over-ALLOCATED) just from the user end. Sure you can see if its swapping out, but that's only once its oversold to high hell.
Went for one two weaks ago, highly recommended. Will post a review in a few days.
Vps hosted on 6 different nodes. And same result. You can feel and I was able to maxout my allocation most of the time
Rocket vps.
But looking the graph do you consider it an oversold node?
Thanks both :-)
I am not very familiar with all the counters.
But I am afraid of what means the 'swap' counter.
Also, I don't know the total memory in the machine. ~200GB? 192GB? If so, the node is still ok, but I still can't tell if you have just 100 or 2000 clients :P

128GB on the node. The swap is what the kernel think need to be parked there (even when you lower swappiness).
How much vps? How much ram is sold?
I told you, 1TB xD j/k I don't know
:-)
