Will use for demo site design.
Btw Why is AS4658?
probably a monitoring & globalping node, along with some small backup services in case i'd ever need them
Thanks for the nice giveaway!
I'd use the VPS to provide regional NTP service, as monitor, and as RIPE Atlas probe.
honkong will be a nice addition to my idling vps team
Does AS4658 enforce strict or loose uRPF (Unicast Reverse Path Forwarding) at its edge boundaries in alignment with BCP38 to mitigate outbound IP spoofing?
Probably dns slave ... Or idling obviously. Also... My 1$/y vimache could use a twin. Glsw.
Question about AS4658: is IPv6 available or planned on these $1/year VPS plans? Thanks for running this generous giveaway — count me in!
Our team zzz at different times lol ...
Thanks. rsync diff is good application of always up pipe. Should also try zfs send/receive to get diff only
We route to china mainly through our regular transit providers.
Interested as well to grab one, will use it for monitoring and VPN.What is the normal price of this server?
4658 is an autonomous system number, like an identity number of a company who participates in internet interconnections. Each company mainly uses a single AS number. You can look it up on google or ask AI for AS numbers of different companies. The AS number's first use was to avoid routing loops, by the original internet design.
Hi @netfront,
I'm curious about AS4658's connectivity to mainland China.
For the three major Chinese ISPs — China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile:
1. Which upstream or peering ASNs are used for outbound routes from AS4658 to each ISP?
2. Do you have direct or optimized routes, such as CN2 (AS4809), CU Premium (AS9929), or CMI (AS58453), or do you mainly rely on standard international transit?
3. How is the actual network performance to mainland China, especially during evening peak hours (latency, packet loss, and throughput)?
4. Are the inbound and outbound routes different?
Would you be able to share some traceroute/MTR results for all three ISPs?
Thanks! I'd also love to use this VPS as a Hong Kong network monitoring and connectivity testing node.
Baseline-CPU-for-hot-migration is a sensible trade-off at this price point - it is the same philosophy the big shared-cloud vCPU tiers use, and on a HKIX-adjacent node the network positioning matters far more than raw compute anyway. The multi-VPN provisioning script sounds genuinely useful too - routing per-service traffic through different exits from a single box is exactly the kind of small convenience that makes a perimeter node practical to live on. Thanks for taking the time to answer in such detail!
Ipv6 available?
Thanks for this generous giveaway! I'd love to use this Hong Kong VPS as a lightweight personal node — mainly for homelab monitoring and as a low-latency relay on my China Telecom line, plus a playground for learning server administration. The HKIX-adjacent location is ideal for me. Count me in!
Thanks for the giveaway and welcome to LET!
I’d use the VPS as a monitoring and connectivity-testing node for my personal services. I’m also curious: what are the main upstream routes for AS4658, and are there any plans to further optimize connectivity to North America?
Please count me in!
Sweet deal! Would love to use it for monitoring, personal tailscale peer relay, and globalping probe,This is what I want.
The normal price of this particular server is HK$88 or USD11.28 per month. Yes we know LET has a preferred price cap, we are looking to make special offers to LET members.
The looking glass is https://lookingglass.netfront.net/
300Mbps is shared within total of around 25Gbps. The 25Gbps is far from saturation, sadly or otherwise... Forgot to mention in original post, our traffic calculation is BOTH directions. Speed stays 10Mbps if reached 1TBbytes, and reset to zero bytes and 300Mbps the first day of next month. Thank you!
We do not currently block ports to VPS. But if the IP reputation turned bad, customers will be denied request to change IP address.
I'm planning to use this VPS as an Asterisk VOIP server. Would be really nice
Small web site or idling
For AS4658 VPS customers, do you publish a status page or send advance notices for planned network maintenance? If so, where can customers subscribe?
AS4658 or netfront.net ,will be a good host provider?
Hi Netfront. Glad you are promoting by giving us a chance to test your services with little or almost no cost. Given the size of the VPS I would like to use it as a sensor for my most critical services, and check use cases of VPN, that's a interesting offering. GLWS and thanks again!
interested, use case is to play around with firewall or host a small dns server
Thanks for the generous offer, and great to see a HK network that's been around since 1995!
Planned use: I work for a valve manufacturer in Wenzhou and recently moved our company website to a self-hosted Hugo static site. Right now it sits on a US VPS, which is slow for our customers in Asia and the Middle East. A HK box right next to HKIX would be perfect as an Asia-facing mirror of the site, plus light uptime monitoring for our main server. 1 core / 1 GB is more than enough for a static site behind Nginx.
Question about AS4658: how does your routing to mainland China look (China Telecom / Unicom / Mobile)? Do you peer directly or go through transit, and how is latency at evening peak?
Count me in, and good luck to everyone!
Static website.
I love Hong Kong! I can't resist a Hong Kong VPS for just $1/Year!
I will use the VPS for uptime and bitwarden
