    Thanks for the nice giveaway!

I'd use the VPS to provide regional NTP service, as monitor, and as RIPE Atlas probe.

That's cool stuff networking geeks do! Thank you!

  • Used your service before, glad to see you here!

Does AS4658 enforce strict or loose uRPF (Unicast Reverse Path Forwarding) at its edge boundaries in alignment with BCP38 to mitigate outbound IP spoofing?

Thank you! Internet routing is mostly asymmetric, the transit routers very often only sees one direction of the traffic, therefor uRPF can only be realistically adopted by the end customer at their edge. We do not adopt uRPF because we have a few transit customers and they may have multiple paths to the Interent. But we do BCP38 based on the correct IP addresses we should see on our network. Thanks!

    Hi @netfront,
I'm curious about AS4658's connectivity to mainland China.
For the three major Chinese ISPs — China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile:
    1. Which upstream or peering ASNs are used for outbound routes from AS4658 to each ISP?
    2. Do you have direct or optimized routes, such as CN2 (AS4809), CU Premium (AS9929), or CMI (AS58453), or do you mainly rely on standard international transit?
    3. How is the actual network performance to mainland China, especially during evening peak hours (latency, packet loss, and throughput)?
    4. Are the inbound and outbound routes different?
Would you be able to share some traceroute/MTR results for all three ISPs?
Thanks! I'd also love to use this VPS as a Hong Kong network monitoring and connectivity testing node.

    1. In addition to the 400 peers at HKIX (which includes some CN telcos), we send traffic into china via our regular transit providers.
    2. We do have direct and optimized routes, but they are reserved for select customers. This is a reality problem, that the market has determined the direct IP transit price between China and HK be very very expensive. It is economically not feasible to offer direct China transit below cost to vast amount of internet users in China who are looking for a fast exit. May be some structural change is needed to improve this situation.
    3. The network performance has to be measured based on individual host. You may visit https://lookingglass.netfront.net/
    4. It is normal for internet routing to have different inbound and outbound routes. The bop protocol does not dictate the paths to be the same

    Thank you for the questions!

For AS4658 VPS customers, do you publish a status page or send advance notices for planned network maintenance? If so, where can customers subscribe?

I think our customers can subscribe to https://hosting.netfront.net/networkissuesrss.php

    Thank you!

Does this route have a direct connection to the mainland?

By "direct connection" I think you meant sub 50ms RTT to China. No, this VPS does not offer that connection.

Count me in, thanks for the giveaway! I'd use the VPS as a small Hong Kong node for lightweight monitoring and a personal VPN/proxy.

  • Hi!
I intend to use your VPS to bypass censorship in my country. I believe that in this age of internet development, the internet and freedom of speech should be upheld.
Therefore, I consider it unacceptable to restrict access to information by blocking popular and well-known services.
    Thank you!

    Thanked by 1lovelyserver
  • thanks for the giveaway! I will use the VPS for private TG bot

  • use for monitoring stuff

  • I have long lacked a node in Hong Kong—a location particularly valuable for reaching audiences across Asia. Furthermore, I serve as an active advocate and ambassador, dedicated to the advancement of the internet ecosystem.

count me in and welcome to LET

  • Interesting offer. Question about AS4658: which transit providers do you use, and is there a looking glass where I can test routing from Asia before entering? Also curious whether IPv6 is included on these boxes.

  • Cool, I also need a monitoring node in the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Thank you for this great opportunity! Since AS4658 has been around since 1995, I'm curious: what has been the most interesting change or challenge in the Hong Kong networking landscape that your team has experienced over the decades?

  • The organization responsible for AS4658 is 2012 Limited. How did your company decide on this name? It doesn't seem that AS4658 was registered in 2012.

Although AS4658 has multiple transit providers, it appears some prefixes are restricted to certain transit providers. Which upstreams will this VPS have access to?

  • I will use it as a VPN.

Does AS4658 support a good peering to North America and Europe? Hurricane Electric upstream seems not a good choice. Why Hurricane Electric?

  • I'd use the VPS as a lightweight test node for my gaming infrastructure projects, particularly for testing Linux server deployments and monitoring. At $1/year perpetually, it'd be a fun little box to experiment with and put to practical use!

I'm also curious about AS4658's network performance, routing, and peering options, particularly for game-server traffic.

  • Nice giveaway :)

Will use it as monitoring, vpn and or host tiny site.

  • I'm in! I'd use this HK VPS as a low-latency VPN exit for my phone plus a small personal blog. Quick question: is IPv6 included by default? Thanks for the giveaway!

  • building an asia CDN?

  • Count me in, please.

    Wow that's nice deal.
Interested as well to grab one, will use it for monitoring and VPN.

  • Count me in, thanks! I'd use it as a small HK monitoring node and a personal VPN exit. One question: does the 1TB count both directions or just outbound?

  • thanks for the giveaway!

  • 25 x PERPETUAL FOREVER $1/Year VPS connected right next to HKIX.Nice!
