It's time to make your own panel.

  • I moved from Cpanel to Directadmin.

@Levi said: How a 1 person generated panel can compete with cPanel or any other panel?

That's the problem I brought up. Webhosting panels are basically "solved". At this point both DirectAdmin & cPanel are grasping at what ideas they can add to keep themselves busy.

If you go through the DirectAdmin changelog the majority of their work these days is just version updates and some spit/shine. The only recent project they did was the autoSSL rework and its caused more issues than solved.

15% minimum, but i think 30% is possible. I see this being the push to get over the $0.50/account hump.

The architecture of both cPanel and DirectAdmin feel (and probably are) quite old, and there is definitely room for improvement there.

For example, the fact that CloudLinux is still needed on top of both to unlock basic features such as PHP extension/version selection is a bit crazy to me.

The UIs are also really not inuitive to use if you are new to the shared website hosting space, and they aren't built to handle advanced/modern web applications (e.g., those based on Next.JS or similar frameworks).

I feel like Enhance.com is the closest thing we have to a modern website hosting control panel.

  • Isn't the big issue compatibility of backups? If you've got a thousand hosts all "writing" their own control panel, it becomes impossible to migrate between hosts. They'll struggle to offer free inbound migrations, and savvy clients will anticipate that they'll be locked in (have to move everything manually) when the time comes to switch.

Have any of these custom panels got a backup format that is 100% compatible with cPanel - both for backups and restores?

    Exactly.

Enhance is a different beast than cPanel/DirectAdmin, but if you're wanting something akin to a DA/CP experience, then its solved.

Cloudlinux is mostly upstream'd into the kernel these days. Backuply or whatever its called does much of what Jetbackup does using Restic and they built that within a couple months or less.

I dunno. Its a hard sell to keep eating these hikes for no reason when we know they've got Claude handling ~everything anyway. They're using Claude for much of WHMCS' development too.

Maybe they just want to milk their customers for whatever is left, knowing it will be replaced by open-source one day.

Everyone can build their panel. But none wants responsibility for hack which will occure latter ;) . No one was fired by using cpanel or directadmin.

Best of luck in building and maintaining your panel.

Yep, it'll be a vicious circle. Prices get jacked, more users flea to DirectAdmin/Opensource/in-house. Prices get jacked further to make up for that loss of revenue, and even more users will look to move.

For what its worth DirectAdmin is still affordable and at the moment claim to have no interest in hiking rates.

That is a good approach from DirectAdmin, because it won't force customers away. This way they keep their customers and gain trust for now.

I asked WHMCS when the next WebPros mandated price increase was, they did not want to share unfortunately.

"I was on WHMCS, but the price hikes pushed me over to Paymenter. Since it's built on Laravel, I just created custom modules to rebuild all the features I had before."

To be fair this has been the case since the beginning. DirectAdmin has their converter, but cPanel doesn't. cPanel's own Plesk importer is crap at best, broken at worst, and I have no idea if their DirectAdmin importer works.

People have used Softaculous and Jetbackup to make things somewhat portable which is cool, but no, I wouldn't expect any of these portals to support packing a DA/CP compatable backup.

    corepanel: https://www.corepanel.net/docs/backups/export-cpanel/

CorePanel supports importing and exporting to cPanel.
