This is what I am thinking. Maybe a drive on my local machine with a Wireguard tunnel setup using DNS (I have dynamic IP). What do you guys think?

Check out Tailscale if you haven't yet!

HYPE FOR RACKNERD'S NEW YEAR THREAD !!

Keep up the hype and you'll end up decked out like me! :)

    RACKNERDGANG

What are you doing with lots of mugs. :D

2 for the cup holders on the chair, another for the table.

Yeah, I'm very ADHD so I have them everywhere. haha

    Backups over backups.

Yes! Is this is a good backup strategy?

Infact, the only sound backup strategy.

But spread them around. Don't stack all of them at one place :D

Yah, maybe I should invest in a few 1GB RAM storage VPSes just for backup. Or, maybe, I could setup a HDD on my local machine to rsync backups directly.

    You should!

Which one would you prefer. VPS or a local backup drive?

Depends on the provider of VPS but Local backup is the best when it comes to speed you can easily access the data, if vps provider gives good options for data security then VPS

I haven't gotten around comparing other providers. Pretty happy with RackNerd. As for security, I like to set it up on my own. It's a good learning experience for me as well.

Both are good options, I would prefer local drive for fast transfers

I am planning to get a cheap SATA HDD for backups soon. Maybe will put that to use for this.

Get a nas device with RAID. If you have money use both vps and local drive, vps for offsite backups and local drive for backups

Was thinking of NAS initially, but, they are too expensive and I have a limited budget.

Maybe get a old pc that has 2 disk slot and use it with software or hardware raid. Preferably minipc

Go for it. I have 20TB RAID 10 at home + Usenet subscription. Couldn't be happier.

20TB HDDs or SSDs? It's quite impressive anyways. D

It's just HDDs on 4 bay HDD Dock connected to old laptop with software RAID. But hey, it works! 🤣

Does this also host your media server, or is just for backups?

    Mostly media, and some backups.
But for backups I also store a copy on a storage VPS I got from BF and another copy on iDrive E2.

Tailscale is based on Wireguard, but I just love the convenience of it and ease of use. I have it installed on everything, so I have a secure connection between local and remote machines all the time, with a full web control panel.

Well, that's good enough for most people's needs. Your comment on older laptops just gave me another idea. I could use my Android box for this. Would install Armbian on it and connect a SATA dock with the said HDD to it and setup the Tailscale/Wg tunnel and use it for backups. This way, I don't have to worry about electricity bills that woulda come with usage of my PC for the backups.

@DaDeveloper Youa re in top position now. Keep going. The Acer Nitro laptop (1st prize) is priced the same as the Skytech Gaming PC on the BF thread. And, Ig, this is the first time, an i7 laptop is up for grabs in a RackNerd GA.

That would be nice if I could get it, but I also want to not always be glued to my device all the time

Well, I promise not to compete for the gaming laptop. Infact, I really need to get back to my work. I won't say no to the backpack though.

Thanks. Let me try for one or PS5.. :p

Good luck, bro. The PS5 digital edition is cool as well. But, the games are really expensive.

You can just subscribe to PS+ and enjoy the game catalog (it's quite a lot).

Nah I prefer to OWN what i pay for

That's a good point as well. Companies be getting greedy nowadays.

One of the few reasons I want to get a job is to get storage to download all of my GOG games

If you are a mid-serious gamer, that's a good motivating factor then.

Nah I just dont trust the tech companies to not try to screw us over

    Another good motivating factor.

Noob! Are you ready for the engagement this time? You're getting the first prize for sure again 😁

LOL! No, this time around, I am gonna hang back. Will be active for a few more days, bu,t starting Jan 1, gotta really get back to serious work, if I wish to come back for BF2025 action.

Oh! But you did win exciting prizes! This was pure hardwork.

Yes, I did. Thankful to Dustin and RackNerd for everything they have been doing for the community. BTW, planning to participate in the GA?

What do you mean by GA?
