sim card for a four-week stay in the usa

edited March 31 in Help

hello. i think this topic was already discussed here not too long ago, but i can't find the thread anymore.

i would like some advice from people in the usa please. the idea is to buy sim cards for two mobile phones (pixel 7a and pixel 6) for our four-week holiday in the usa. the best thing would be prepaid and without much effort. a us phone number is not so relevant for us but data volume for messenger and navigation is needed.

what suggestions do you have?

addition: ideally we would like to buy the cards when we land in the usa. is it possible to buy prepaid sim cards like this in the usa for foreigners?

Have heard pretty good things about these actually in terms of pricing and performance, besides being privacy-centric (no personal data, payment via crypto). The Pixels should have eSIM capabilities.

It's fairly easy. For Monero Cake Wallet on your phone is an easy way, afaik you can even buy Monero via credit card through them.

Yes, it can be activated online
Get the service on the day of travel and follow the activation steps as soon as you are in the US airport.

Use airport free wifi during the setup

Assuming your phone has eSim option

Yes, you can buy pre-paid SIM cards and top-up cards at drugstores (Walgreens, CVS) and supermarkets.

Go for an eSIM though, your phones support it.

Use the address of your contact person in the USA

eSim is virtual sim and just online activation is needed. No physical sim is purchased

If you come from EU, using Tmobile should not cause any trouble. They're using very similar bands. Verizon should be good for tourists from Japan as they use similar technics if I recall correctly. No idea about the here mentioned Tello though.

    Tello uses T-Mobile's network.

  • For airalo.com you don’t need to provide an address nor a last name. There is no eKYC requirement for U.S. so they don’t verify your identity. You can buy it and install it at home, and you will have data when your plane lands.

it seems that google does not release special mobile phones for specific regions (like other manufacturers do). https://www.gsmarena.com/google_pixel_6-11037.php
