Completely Free Test VMs [Nebula Cloud]

Hello once again LowEndTalk,

Today (Christmas day) we would like your help in testing out OpenNebula Cloud, a free and open sourced control panel that supports KVM, Xen and VMWare hyper visors configured in a cluster environment. Other important features include: Hotplug of CPU and RAM, hot-attach/detach of NICs and Disks, Live Migrations, Snapshots (saving, reversion, deletion), Cloning, and Backups. (All the features that make a cloud a cloud!)

We need your help in finding and reporting issues that stop this software from being production ready. (Please see the FAQ and Known Cavaets section of this post.)

Simply post in here or PM me the specification of a testbed account you would like, and we will set one up for you. Standard resources included: 1 VM Limit, 1 GB RAM, 1 CPU, 20 GB Disk, 2 IPv4, and SPICE or VNC access. You can request more than this of course! You will get an account in Sunstone which you can use to Deploy, Undeploy, Launch/Create, Re-Create, Boot, Destroy, etc your VM.

All we ask in return at the moment is that you report any issues or exploits you find in the software, the hypervisor, the control panel itself, or the VPS services given therein; either via this thread or via PM, so that we may know whether or not this software is ready to go production!

Currently available resource pool:

  • 4800 CPU units (core * 100)
  • More than 250000 MB RAM
  • Roughly 6TB of disk

Servers will be given out first-come-first-serve and may go down at any time, these are for testing; and any time we do find an issue or an issue is reported, we will try and fix it as soon as possible.

We will be testing only the KVM HyperVisor at this time, with the Realtek 1183/1187 NIC.

To be included, please include the following details:

  • Requested OS / Distribution (Windows, Linux, Solaris, BSD)
  • Requested RAM amount (CPU/disk will be assigned accordingly)

Please consult the following list of currently available media:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Linux CentOS 6.5 (ISO)
  • Linux Debian Squeeze
  • Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
  • Linux Fedora 20 (ISO)

We can add more media if it is requested!

Known Issues:

  • Currently, DHCP / network contextualization does not work whatsoever. Most distributions will wrongfully detect the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 when it's actually 255.255.252.0 in this case. The gateway also should end in .136.1 not .139.1. Your resolve.conf may also contain an incorrect nameserver, which should instead read: nameserver 8.8.8.8.
  • The actions in the control panel are very misleadingly named ("Boot" vs "Deploy" vs "Start" vs "Resume"), ("Undeploy" vs "Shutdown" vs "Powerofff" vs "Shutdown" vs "Destroy" vs "Suspend"), etc.
  • There is no inter-VM communication yet. This may or may not be a planned feature, as I could not find much information about the specifics of how to use it in the documentation.

Frequently asked questions:

When will the beta end / virtual machines be taken down ? We will keep the machines up and the beta test going until we have worked out all the kinks in the panel and setup, and have made the entire system production-ready. We will then release the pricing to continue your services, you are not obligated to continue them; and will be given time to take your files off-site if you choose not to continue past the free period.

What will this service cost once it has been deemed ready ? We do not yet know what we would like to charge for this service, or in how long from now the service will be available. We know that we want to keep the 128, 384, 512 MB plans available for the lowend market (below $7), but are not sure at this time if the 768MB or 1GB+ plans will fit within the $7 price range.

Why do I keep seeing 'execution timed out' / Why is my VM 'PENDING' ? As this panel heavily uses AJAX to facilitate updates of the page without the need for you to constantly refresh your browser or re-load the entire page, there can be communication time outs. We are currently aware of a big one that happens for about 20 seconds when deploying an Ubuntu VPS; as this copies the entire Ubuntu install to the new location, at a rate of 250MB/second.

My question isn't here !! While that's not exactly a question, feel free to reply to this PM or ask in the thread if you think the question will help others too!

Think of this as our Christmas present to the community, some assembly required.

This service presented to you by @PavHost (for finding the software, installing it, getting it to a proof of concept stage) and @HardCloud (for tweaking the software towards production, further development)
