I wish YouTube didn't take down all Moonman songs, so I'm stuck with Blp Kosher for now I guess.

Google domains was cheaper when you register as Turkish.

Nothing like some fine tax evasion and fraud.

Thanks for the news. I have just moved the two domains I have with them to Spaceship.

  • I only have 1 domain with google and that was because they were the only place to get a .zip domain 🤣

So either Squarespace thinks this is a huge chance to upsell their services as a registrar with a jump started domain customer base, or Google sold it to them for less than it costs to start a domain registrar.

    I find both thoughts awkward.

"honor all existing Google Domains customers’ renewal prices for at least 12 months following the closing of the transaction"
"will become the exclusive domains provider for any customer purchasing a domain along with their Workspace subscription from Google directly for a minimum of three years."

    Gambling on those Workspace clients?

Note everyone: this is still pending regulatory approval.

Although it is likely to go through, who knows with the UK being the wild card they have been.

It does make me wonder how serious google should be taken for their other enterprise products like Workspace - are they going to just kill it or sell it in 18 months time? Who knows.

  • I don't see how anyone can take GCP seriously these days if they've started killing off products like this

Yeah I agree, I think Google are becoming an amazing sales team for Microsoft 365 now

The paid $180 million for 10 million registered domains.

  • So that's where "We dont refund transaction fee" money went huh?

Guess I'll have to find a new place as well.

    What

    18 bucks per domain

For a clientele of the majority probably not even using a builder of ANY sort

Now @Francisco gonna buy SquareSpace to relaunch BuyShared (also to make entry via Namecrane in domain market)

  • JasonMJasonM Member

    I'm late here

  • I can't wait for NameCrane. I only had one domain on Google Domains and it was only because they were the cheapest at the time. I swear I just need to finish the commit to de-google my life. While I still have my Google Apps / Workspace, it is not active. I can't trust them for email anymore after that fiasco.

  • In terms of current solutions... I switched my domains to CF like 2 years ago and love it.

Not gonna fit everyone, though. Afaik you have to use CF DNS.

I use CF for DNS on several sites, but I have not heard good things about their registrar experience, particularly support.

I don't think I've ever used any registrar support in my entire lifetime

    Although I'm not very old

But I have had a fair bit of domains

At a fair bit of registrars

Yeah, I dunno. Used Cloudflare for about 10 years now, and I've never once submitted a ticket lol. Only started paying them 2 years ago anyways.

I don't feel very old myself. Also have a large number of domains myself. As I've started to acquire more, I usually just accept them at whatever registrar they currently sit and then renew them if need be, otherwise I will sit on them a bit and then transfer them to one of my preferred registrars, currently NameCheap and Porkbun. If the project is not of high importance I will just use whatever is cheapest at tld-list and transfer them later.

    Yeah

I keep all at the same registrar

But that’s just because I mostly use .se & .nu, and so they transfer for free

I wouldn’t do that with .com or .net etc

Sometimes I bulk transfer to the cheapest registrar, renew, transfer back to my favorite

Bulk of my domains that aren't as important/parked are now with Cloudflare Registrar purely for the price and sometimes bulk transfer out when transfer discounts are available. Literally save thousands of $$$$ per year B) No Idea why folks would want yo pay more for Google Registrar.

Bulk transfer into Cloudflare Registrar https://blog.centminmod.com/2021/03/04/2333/how-to-bulk-domain-transfer-to-cloudflare-registrar-and-save-on-domain-renewal-costs/

Bulk transfers out of Cloudflare Registrar https://blog.centminmod.com/2021/02/28/2310/how-to-bulk-domain-transfer-out-from-cloudflare-registrar-via-cloudflare-api/

Cloudflare Registrar though has one weakness for many domains and that is bulk domain management and billing management. That's one reason I still have other domains elsewhere.

@emgh said: 18 bucks per domain

So taking .net as an example...

    Porkbun charges $11.48 per .net
    NameCheap: $11.98
    NameSilo: $11.79.
    GoDaddy: $14.99
    SquareSpace: $20.00
NameCrane: who knows, but they'll have the coolest logo for sure

Total ICANN fees that the registrar pays are $10.67 per .net registration or renewal. That doesn't include fixed fees.

How many will renew at that price?

People who sign up at SquareSpace are doing so out of convenience or cluelessness. Same as they would at HostGator or Dreamhost - "I need a website, I pick this company, ok they do everything."

Is that the typical Google domains customer?
