Google sells domain registration to Squarespace

jamesratjamesrat Member

Interesting news today.

Google adding another service to the graveyard. Instead of killing it they are selling it which in my opinion is a little off brand for google.

Well that's disgusting. Moving the domains I have on them off before the transaction is completed.

Why are you all saying you want to move your domains now? What did Squarespace do wrong that Google did right?

What did Facebook do wrong that Myspace did right.

Anyway, I used Google Domains for the sole purpose that it was under my Google account umbrella. No other reason than that and security.

I'm happy with Tucows/Hover and Namecheap.
They aren't perfect by any means, but are cheap(for most tld's and gtld's) and support isn't bad.

Personally waiting for Namecrane and will move my domains there.

Google Domain is currently available in several languages, but Squarespace is currently an English UI service, so that's a concern.

  • emghemgh Member

Would have thought Google Domains could have been a great way in for Google to GCP

Slowly you’re using their DNS, their email, their compute, their databases etc

    Like Route 53

There are different registrars for different TLDs, so it would be a good time to explore the TLD-LIST.

Also, Squarespace makes no sense for a domain if you’re not using their builder. I feel like a better buyer could have been found that could maintain much more of the moved clients long-term

But I guess not too many registrars are as filled with cash

Still, the likes of GoDaddy etc

  • neel_qeruneel_qeru Member, Host Rep

Google Domains was a bit overpriced for me. Maybe not GoDaddy overpriced, but still more expensive than other registrars.

I use Dynadot for both Qeru and personal use. Porkbun is another good alternative, a bit cheaper but not enough for me to justify switching.

My brother once bought a domain from Google, well because he likes anything Google, and criticized me for getting something cheaper.
