Website Design Competition -- FreeVPS.org
Hello!
Some of you guys have seen Free NAT KVM Courtesy of GTHost.
The free VPS program seems to be getting underway all right. I think there are about 18 VPSes which have been delivered. Thanks @GTHost! Thanks also to @TheOnlyDK for system administration!
@DP kindly is letting us use his domain, FreeVPS.org. Thank you @DP!
Maybe some web design guys might like to enter a competition for the FreeVPS.org website? If people are interested, we could discuss the design details and prototypes here in this thread. Maybe a community vote could determine the winner.
Anyone interested?
Thanks!
Tom

Hi, I am interested
@Not_Oles please adapt design from motherfuckingwebsite.com
Try http://bettermotherfuckingwebsite.com
HI @FatGrizzly! Hi @iamATOM!
Thanks for the suggestions! BMFW is the best!
July 2020 brought the first archive of my first website for not selling VPSes. Here's the acknowledgement from the page source of that archive:
In addition to BMFW:
https://cr.yp.to/
https://9p.io/plan9/
https://www.berkshirehathaway.com/ (Needs single column TOC.)
http://www.paulgraham.com/
https://zeke.sikelianos.com/
But I was kinda hoping one of our awesome front end guys might design something really new and jizzy for freevps.org. What do you think? Too crazy? ๐
might ping @ravi / @dewcodes on this one
Lmao, Gawd.
Haha, we were just kidding with MFW and BMFW :P
I will try to spin up a mockup today or tomorrow. Do you have any set of guidelines, assets or copy content?
@Not_Oles is this ur new project ? You wanna become a free VPS provider ?
The domain name reminds me of FreeVPS.us, a forum backed by several providers that give free VPS to members by posting 20 posts per month to keep it.
Isn't it the time for all AI web design ? Just think of some text describing the website and rest will be done by AI.
First you can use stable diffusion to come up with a design just from some text (can be tested for free here : https://huggingface.co/spaces/stabilityai/stable-diffusion)
For example I used these words "website mockup vps" and here are the results :
Then use screenshot to code and get the corresponding html/css design (https://github.com/emilwallner/Screenshot-to-code)
Thank you for recommending me.
@Not_Oles you can consider me for frontend development.
Please check my free web hosting template (built using react / nextjs).

@Not_Oles ← What will be the fee for providers to post offers on FreeVPS.org ?
Legend
5 push-ups! ๐
Thanks! Will check!
@patro
I have to go try this. Maybe we should refactor LET similarly. ๐ค
Thanks @GTHost! ๐
Hi again @iamATOM !
It's okay to kid around! I like kidding. I still like BMFW. My version of it got 100 on Google page speed insights.
Design and content guidelines can be extracted via AI ๐ from the posts in the giveaway thread, especially the OP there.
Please remember to thank @GTHost.
Thanks for giving the design a go. Good luck in the competition! ๐ซ

Hi again @ravi!
I think your "hext" template looks great!
Do you want to adapt your template to FreeVPS.org so as to enter our design competition?

Good luck in the competition! ๐ซ
Best!

I think this one is an intentional "who cares?" Everything you'd ever need is there and there is literally no reason to do more than the bare minimum. For a company with a $600B+ market cap.
"If you have any comments about our WEB page, you can write us at the address shown above. However, due to the limited number of personnel in our corporate office, we are unable to provide a direct response."
It wouldn't surprise me if Warren did the site himself.
If I ever go to the annual meeting, I am going to bring up the fact that they're using a GoDaddy cert when they could save money by using Let's Encrypt. Wastrels.
Nope! But thanks for asking.
@TheOnlyDK is a great guy and a hard worker. I want to pass leadership of the FreeVPS.org project (FVPS) entirely over to him. I already asked @GTHost if they would transfer the existing server and the existing account credits to @TheOnlyDK. I'm waiting to hear back from @GTHost on that transfer request.
The FreeVPS.org domain is from @DP, who plans to transfer it once FVPS get a bit better organized. We've been talking about incorporating it.
We have had an inquiry from another well known provider who also might want to participate.
I think @TheOnlyDK and FreeVPS.org could use another server or two in additional locations besides Chicago. Due to the generosity of @GTHost, the Chicago server is funded for a while by existing account credits. FreeVPS.org could use some donations to cover incorporation costs. We could use a couple people for the board of directors plus an accountant and an attorney.
Of course, my thinking is biased toward the US, since that's where my limited experience has been. But perhaps FreeVPS.org could establish itself formally elsewhere than in the US. One tricky part about establishing a non-profit in the US is getting IRS and state tax authority approval. Maybe NGO/charitable orgnization is easier elsewhere. I don't know.
The FreeVPS.org project already is off the ground because we have a working server and some happy users. My plan is to help @TheOnlyDK and other folks who become associated get the FreeVPS.org project more organized. Then I expect to leave FreeVPS.org so that I can focus more on learning C and Xv6.
Besides some board members and an accountant and an attorney, FreeVPS.org needs a few financial contributions, additional mad sysadmin skillz, and a couple more servers.
Monthly or?
We have IPv9 VPS and first hour is free.
If we can get a listing, we might release experimental IPv4 addresses too.
With all the fees on LET, I don't trust any project coming; not even if it involves push-ups.
Hi @default!
Please share what you are working on. What is bringing happiness into your life these days?
Best!
Tom
I was thinking "lifetime," but we'd have to consult with @TheOnlyDK before deciding.
Please sign me up!
Want to share the proposed listing and the experimental addresses? (Not kidding. We're grateful for your help with the server configuration! So you'll for sure have a listing on our Thank-you page. But may I please know what more you would like?) Thanks @yoursunny!
Okay, I tried twice. Each time I picked a favorite from the four offerings. The first favorite was with text "freevps.org website design."
The second favorite was with text "freevps.org website design in contemporary AI generated style."
Recently I was involved peripherally with using figma to create a design and then passing the design to a coder for implementation. Here @patro has the same two step process with the first step implemented in https://huggingface.co/spaces/stabilityai/stable-diffusion and the second step implemented by https://github.com/emilwallner/Screenshot-to-code. I haven't tried the second (code) step, but I might try it if people like the designs.
For guys who submit serious work, such as @ravi, the interesting question might be whether this AI generated stuff is at all useful. What do you think?
5 push-ups per lifetime? I think it'll need more than that. Monthly sounds better IMO, but I'd rather it to be 7
Okay @yoursunny, we got the word from the boss. 7 push-ups per month.
I do not "work" for profits and I consider money the biggest lie ever invented to cheat on others and oneself. I am the saddest and laziest troll in the whole wide world. You know why? You guessed it. Because the end is nigh, especially when there is money involved.
