was not able to edit poll and was little worried if i delete i wont be able to add back :P thats why i said just leave comment so it will help others to decide which one is more discussed and mentioned.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • What's the point of a poll with just 5 options out of hundreds of actual choices out there? There need to be quite a few more options:

    https://www.virustotal.com/gui/url/2004ff22db31cdf26765c14e4405ec594bb680bc34be30bc912abeab5c305

Probably doesn't make sense for home users to pay for AV these days. Between Windows Defender, Sophos, and others, the free options can do the job as well as you could ask for.

  • None, or maybe windows defender. I know what I do and I don't need other bloated antivirus on my desktop

  • Sophos. It just works.

It heavily depends on system and work that you're doing.
According to AV-Comparatives Kaspersky is #2 lightest AV. https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/performance-test-october-2021/
They test on old i7 + 8GB ram + SSD.

    In my experience:
For lowend machines ESET works the best. Very low RAM usage. BitDefender will be really slow if you have 2-4GB ram, because it has very big signatures which are placed in RAM. ESET focuses on making smallest signatures possible and catching most threats with them. BitDefender focuses on having everything malicious in their signatures ASAP.

For midend machines and laptops Defender + Comodo is amazing. Defender is good for most threats, but lacks in network protection and there's where Comodo Firewall kicks in and can automatically allow connections which are trusted and ask you if you want to allow untrusted connections - most malware today need internet to run so Firewall is very good idea. Comodo has also HIPS where you can define allow/deny rules and if set correctly then undetected 0day malware wont do shit to your machine, because its not allowed to. You can also use Sandbox feature and then unknown executables will run in their own container. These are very good features, but you need some time to set it up.

For higher end / install & forget Kaspersky works the best. Zero setup required, one of the best AV engines in last decade (always on top), awesome anti-ransomware modules which work even offline, very small amount of false positives, zero ads in Free version, your data is stored securely and doesn't leave Switzerland. This is AV I personally use.

You already have 3 layers of protection on Mac with 5 different technologies.
Apple XProtect + AppStore + Gatekeeper + Notarization + Malware Remove Tool

  • Malwarebytes Pro, but only because I got a lifetime license. I don't use any AV software these days other than Windows Defender. Malwarebytes Pro is a nice addon :)

  • they said win defender & common sense is enough..
but personally i use avast free

  • Interesting topic. I don't have any Windows machines myself, but a lot of family members do and this is always a question they ask me about.

But I've always wonder, how much of an anti-virus is really needed if you don't open/run questionable files/executables. And if you don't visit questionable (i.e porn... or other questionably legal) sites or use an extension like NoScript or WoT to keep you on the straight and narrow?

  • For windows, I only need simplewall, it block outgoing traffic, if I see something shady I just click no and program never got any data sent.
    https://github.com/henrypp/simplewall

And of course windows defender for common virus.

  • in old years 2007-2010 zone alarm used to be famous with their firewall now a days no one speaking about it.

  • Valid points, however, I'd trust the results of 50+ engines versus one. Given that each independent company updates their signatures at different times and one cannot expect them to be always accurate with current threats. Sure, there's some false positives but common sense goes a long way...

  • For me its webroot all the way. Used to download many questionable things as a teen and went through so many different antivirus products that failed at some point or another.

Why would you trust something that they say can't be trusted for testingsamples?

VirusTotal is a tool for uploading samples to all AV labs at once, if sample is not known to AV static engine/cloud then it wont detect it there even if AV would detect it in post-execution via behavioral modules / network inspection etc. and majority of them will do it.

Want proof? Here's kaseya ransomware, one of the most known samples from 2021.
    https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/d55f983c994caa160ec63a59f6b4250fe67fb3e8c43a388aec60a4a6978e9f1e/detection
Check how many are still AV's tell you on VirusTotal that its "Undetected"! Half year passed, one of the most known samples of ransomware and its still "undetected"? Ofc they will detect it, but not with their static engine.

Even better - change icon of malware via ResHacker and enjoy perfect result on VirusTotal lol. If VirusTotal tells you that you shouldn't use their site for this purpose then seriously, they know what they are saying. Dont do it.

Here's my 100% safe app that I wrote year ago to speed up setting up new PC's in company. There's nothing malicious in it. https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/c01622112f901bcbf310a01aa4e1dc0cc4ff6fe28b6b4094db667293a4dc0c5f
See how many detections it gets. Most funny thing is that "Microsoft" detects it, but in real world Defender DOESNT detect it! And you know why? Just hover on "Microsoft" on VirusTotal... :)

  • No Antivirus i disabled my Windows Defender. Im using dr web cureit for every file i had downloaded before open it.

  • Panda Dome

  • ESET NOD32

For Windows - I use the free version of 360 Total Security. With Windows' default firewall.
    https://www.360totalsecurity.com/en/

For Linux, I'm considering ESET Nod32 - but I'm not sure it won't do more harm than good.
And Linux default firewall (comes with the distro).

    Thanked by 1AlwaysSkint
  • On windows: Eset Internet Security ("Nod32")
(I miss also from the poll: Gdata, Kaspersky, AVG) :$

  • Another vote to nod32. Lightweight and efficient.

  • Only Windows defender for the last 3years.

  • bitdefender on mobile.
avira on pc/laptop. plus malwarebytes too.
