Honestly a little scary that the email was sent to such an old email since it's not intuitive at all how to update this. I thought my email was fully changed a while ago.

Is Hetzner planning to replace all their routers? Been getting maintenance emails all morning for pretty much all our servers:

    Urgent maintenance on router fsn1-dc15-ex9k2, fsn1-dc15-ex9k1, fsn1-dc12-ex9k2, fsn1-dc12-ex9k1, fsn1-dc14-ex9k1, etc, etc.
The affected systems are not accessible during the maintenance period.

Maintenance window given is 1-2 hours. Days are all over Nov and Dec.

    Same for hel
    hel1-dc2-ex9k2, hel1-dc2-ex9k1

So far I get them al in November all on different days

  • Yes me too for all my servers. I also got maintenance mail from leaseweb. Same dates for 6 hours. Only they have a redundant infra.

    Leaseweb:
WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON YOUR SERVICE?

There will be no service interruption to your infrastructure during the maintenance.
However, you might experience a brief moment of minimal higher latency or packet loss.

Seems like some undisclosed 0 day in JunOS or similar ? I know @Clouvider uses Juniper, maybe knows more ?

For anyone who ever changed their account email, I finally found that there's a second place to change the email that you get maintenance alerts on: https://accounts.hetzner.com/status

Hetzner makes me wonder why Hetzner is always ahead in terms of lowest storage prices per TB/server compared to other ISPs.

  • Propably higher discounts on new HW if bulk ordering them.

  • How not to trigger account suspension on signup even though you're using real info and without a VPN.

  • emghemgh Member, BF Ambassador

Nobody have any juicy info about this? Surely it’s not an easy decision for them to schedule 1h of downtime for so many clients

  • Question for those of you who have been using Hetzner for production stuff (not hobby/personal project, but actual products run by a company) and for longer than a year: how has reliability been for you? have you ever had any major outage or other issue that made you consider leaving Hetzner?

I absolutely love Hetzner and I have been a customer for many years myself but only for personal stuff so far.

I never had any significant issues in all those years, but we are considering migrating from Google Cloud to Hetzner at work as well in the near future (we only use Kubernetes and don't need the other services that GCP offers, so we can just run Kubernetes in Hetzner Cloud using my own open source tool - hetzner-k3s - and slash the bill). So I would like to hear if someone has had some bad experiences running something in production in Hetzner, especially with Hetzner Cloud. Thanks a lot!

I’ve had smaller issues. Nothing really major (i.e. no hours of downtime).

I supose this thread demonstrates a clear difference though, I suspect GCP can upgrade routers without scheduling 1hr of downtime for this many clients.

I personally do not see how the service would be different when run for business or production use vs personal or hobby

If one has had flawless service so far, does not guarantee it will remain the same in future. Even aws, Azure, gcp have had their fair share of outages (partially if not fully).

If and when one goes to the cloud (regardless of the path, production, or hobby) you are probably already familiar with how any outage will impact your use case.

I have all major clouds being used in production including hetzner a thr moment. I also have appropriate DR and backup and HA setup as needed. Sure when outages happen it's not the best feeling.

This is personally very subjective topic to get feedback on as one size does not fit all.

And the best part, you have personally said you have loved the service for your personal use. Why do you think something different would happen when your company will utilize for production?

Cost savings also come at a trade off. Doing a small migration to see feasibility to thr new cloud and then ramping it up will lead to less headaches and give your company a taste of what to expect.

    Good luck!

In 3 years we have never had any kind of outage with GCP, apart from max 4 minutes during Cloud SQL maintenance, which was anyway scheduled. I know it's hard to get the exact same kind of service from smaller companies compared to the hyperscalers, especially considering the price difference, but I am hoping Hetzner is stable enough for us.

I guess I wanted to hear more assurances that I can forward to the team, since I am the person who recommended we migrate to Hetzner :)

But I see your point. The thing is that having used it only for personal stuff, I had different expectations compared to using them for company stuff.

Hetzner "Dedicated": ( 5 Servers at the moment)

Last 2 months 2x down time:

    • Broken motherboard (1 month old server) (1 hour)
    • Tripped fuse due to other server issue (1 hour)

And in the 3 years before that 1 broken drive (10 min down)

Hetzner cloud so far 0 issues

Yeah, so I'd guess A LOT of savings with, PROBABLY, over time (speculation, of course), a bit more issues. It's generally stable though.

    No issues for us either.

We are running production workloads like powerdns, zabbix, statuspage and mailcow as backup on hetzner cloud for over 4 years now.

We had two major issues with them a few years ago:
    1. One downtime of 2-3 days because of an important damage in their DC (10 years ago).
    2. Their sales department is closed during weekends and we needed a cpanel upgrade from 100 to 150 accounts and we were locked for 3 days because of it. (6 years ago).

I just discovered there's not only additional IPs on dedicated servers but also failover IPs, although much more expensive, it seems you're able to move them not only between servers but actually between locations

Some services that I use requires an IP to whitelist and don't offer to automatically change this IP, so I needed a flexible solution and this was perfect

Edit: In case I have to upgrade servers without losing access to the whitelists

  • Any reason for needing to be 18+ for a Hetzner account? Would have loved to use y'all, but alas, another 8 months..

I assume it is because that is the legal age of adulthood in Germany, and in many other countries, but if you want, I can ask a colleague about it just to be sure. --Katie

It’s going to be the usual zero setup fee offer.
