Any part of the US will be fine.

Disagree, at least speaking for VirMach's services. The routing in VirMach's buffalo location is just terrible to the west coast, latency is not great and I get very little throughput from my two there, here in California. I don't have a VirMach server in Texas, but generally Texas is a safe bet if you're looking for good routing to both coasts.

I have a 8G in Buffalo from the last BF sale that I sometimes use as a remote desktop with LXDE and NoMachine from the west coast. No lags whatsoever and I can even stream YouTube.

Which is the most ideal location if I want to make my wordpress blog accessible to the whole US with the most optimal latency? Or it doesn't matter if I go with a dns?

Latency doesn't matter much for blogs, but I think chicago is the best location for US + decent connectivity to EU. If you're expecting a decent amount of traffic from EU as well, NJ/NYC may be your best bet. West coast if you're expecting traffic from Asia. You're going to have decent latency from anywhere in US anyway, so you may as well account for traffic from elsewhere...

When you say dns there could be many different solutions you're referring to, but I'm gonna assume you're referring to cloudflare? If yes, the location still matters but to a lesser extent since cloudflare helps you cache static stuff.

So, time to bug you guys to see if I've missed something obvious before I go to open a ticket. My most recent VM seems to be not actually mounting my iso and ignores my boot order of cdrom only, whether I do it from Manage Product in the client area or from SolusVM. I haven't had any problems mounting an iso to do a clean install on any of my other virmach vps's, and just tested on one of my spares to confirm it's working fine. Anyone know if there's something known that my google-fu is failing on? Or is this time to give in and open a ticket?

I got the same issue yesterday and struggled a bit, but managed to solve it, with:

    • go to Solus control panel

    • set to boot from CD-ROM

    • go to CD-ROM tab and mount an option there (I took Ubuntu 18.04 LIVE)

    • boot from CD-ROM and start install

    • change back to boot from HD when asked to

This worked for me, after the 'normal' ways of installation didn't work.
    Hope it helps. :)

That's how I've been going about it, but after picking my iso from the cdrom tab, I get the green message to reboot for changes to take effect, click reboot in SolusVM, and it reboots back to the hard drive. I've done the same on another server here during this sale with no problem, which is why I'm kinda lost.

Could be ISP-specific, I'm on twc/spectrum in SoCal which isn't exactly the best in the world, but my other virmach vps in L.A. has similar issues with transfers to mine in Buffalo. I'm setting one up in San Jose now, I'll have to test from it too at some point.

Yes, i mean cdn, like cloudflare.

Thank you all for the suggestions and help, I don't think I'm expecting much traffic from EU or asia for now, so I will get a dallas/chicago server depending on the deals, then pair with cloudflare.

  • Cyber Week!
    We have done it!
