I remain eternally grateful that Hetzner never verified my account (signed up for in a drunken stupor). Saving me from buying yet more servers I do not need.

Now getting 70+ ms from Sweden to Finland. I'll try to get in contact with their team and see if they plan on fixing more direct routing within the coming weeks or months or if this is for the future, because right now connections seems to route through Frankfurt no matter what.

I have stuff in Stockholm and I route directly.. It really depends on your upstream(s) as well.

I'd guess it should be around 8 milliseconds, instead of 10+.

Yes, my servers in Portlane routes directly. My network, my schools and every other home network I've tried on in my region, in this case Bahnhof, routes through Frankfurt from Sweden to Finland and have been since the beginning.

Question is, what upstreams you're having available or if there's a PNI that would make more sense to use cost-wise than going directly

Can I even check available upstreams for a home network? I know they use Telia & Level 3.

You can - by putting in your IP on bgp.he.net e.g. - see what networks are under upstreams and peering

Haven't seen those in a few days. They might have popped up when I wasn't looking though ;-) There is a Hetzner inventory availability notifier script on Github that someone posted a few days ago. You might want to take a look at that if you're looking to get one in Finland.

Cloud has been available now for file, and oh boy:

That's going to run 20TB out pretty fast! The test was done with the 2cpu/4GB/40GB 4.99€/month plan.

(someone else can post bench results)

edit: Apparrently Google/Maxmind thinks the VPS ip is from russia though..

Hi LET readers, Since only a very limited number of servers are available at the moment in Finland, we have not advertised the data center in Helsinki yet. In the coming months, there will be an official opening, which we will announce in the press. For now, only some of the dedicated root servers which use Robot adminstration interface are available. As more products become available, you will see that you can choose the location for the products using Robot. If you can't choose the location Finland, that means it's not available yet. Please be patient and understand that we are working at top speed to offer more products there as soon as possible.

The C-Lion cable, which Cinia built from Rostock to Helsinki, and with which Hetzner Online was involved, is finished. Thanks to @tomle for pointing out that the other article above was about a separate Cinia project through the Arctic Circle.

If you are a customer and are not satisfied with the routing/networking from Finland, please write a support request via Robot so that our networking team can help you more quickly and effectively. --Katie, Marketing

But can you optimize the network from China? After actual testing, your Finnish server used any Internet provider's network at any time, and the link quality was particularly poor. It was replaced by a data center in Germany. During the day (China time), the Internet links from China Telecom and China Mobile are still barely enough, but the quality of links from China Unicom is very poor. And, at night (Chinese time), the quality of links is very poor, regardless of the provider's network. Poor link quality is reflected in slow speed, packet loss, and high latency.

In other words, your German data center and Finnish data center are very unfriendly to network links from China. However, the German data center is better than the Finnish data center, but it is still relatively poor. I don't say that I hates Hetzner. On the contrary, I like Hetzner very much because you have provided unbeatable value for money and customer service support. This is something I have never experienced before with other service providers. However, if you can slightly optimize the Internet links from China, it would be great.@Hetzner_OL

Sounds strange to host in Finland or in Germany for Chinese client base. Woudln't hosting in China would be obvious option? Yes, there are some hurdles in it. Otherwise Hong Kong / Singapore hosting would sound better. Yet sites outside China are hindered by GFW anyway. How about using Alibaba?

I'm just wondering why Finland for China. If it's about global audience, then using some caching solution inside China if possible, would make sense.

I like Hetzner for the same reason, but part of the way they provide that unbeatable value is by having not-so-good network connectivity to outside Europe. They could improve the connectivity by spending more money but then they would have to charge more, and would no longer be such an unbeatable value.

Most people looking for good transit to China who can't host directly in China, instead pick places like Los Angeles or Singapore (or HK but that is very expensive). If you host your stuff in Europe then yeah, results won't be great. You have to take that into consideration when making your siting decisions.
