Hiring Support Specialists in Bangalore, IN

jarjar Patron Provider, Top Host, Veteran

Hey everyone!

I need some help, and I know we have a lot of talent on LET. Recently DigitalOcean opened a location in India and we've been looking for talented support agents in the region. You know the culture, you know what developers and admins need, and we need you to help us expand our outreach and presence in the region.

You should be comfortable in the role of a Linux admin, have strong communication and customer service skills, and be comfortable with not actually logging in to troubleshoot problems on the customer's server. Instead, you will be teaching them how to manage their servers via support tickets, and also supporting our platform.

Linux admin skills in relation to Apache, Nginx, Wordpress, MySQL, and all of those basic things will go a long way.

The job will be working in office in Bangalore so you would need to be there or be willing to move there.

I guess they provided the same form the US applicants use.

  • Amitz said: Out of interest: Why is DO asking "Are you Hispanic/Latino?" in their application form?

maybe because they want to do DigitalOcean great again?

    Requirement from President Trump.

  • Would be weird if everyone from LET ended up being there.

You are being given the opportunity to provide the following information in order to help us comply with federal and state Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action record keeping, reporting, and other legal requirements.

What more do you need to know? :)

Ah! I had overseen that. So it's mostly for statistical reasons?

If they are a federal contractor or subcontractor, they are obligated by law to be an "affirmative action employer", so I suppose it's for compliance with all that.

Technically, yes. In practice? Depends how jaded you are.

Probably left over from their USA application process, so they can prove they're not discriminating, and in some circumstances get federal funding for hiring minorities.

  • @jarland I'm curious how Digital Ocean handles support: do they outsource all of it to India, or do they "follow the sun" and have local techs working on normal business hours?

Click on that gov link and the very first sentence says "For federal contractors and subcontractors, affirmative action must be taken"

  • I think he's indicating that it's optional for U.S. applicants to declare their race or ethnicity on application forms @deadbeef

From my experience as a customer its more "follow the sun" to ensure they have 24/7 support. I've had responses from people all over the world at different times of the day :)

All of them have been great, of course!

Does the ability to read DO tutorials count towards those Linux Admin skills? :D:D

I think we're all aware of the connotations that appear with the words India and outsourcing. I'm not afraid of addressing these head on, because this is really important. American companies massively outsourced support to the lowest bidders in India and created a stereotype for both American companies and Indian support. We're not outsourcing and we're not looking to get away cheap. We want the best of the best and we want them to be part of the DO family, with the same treatment and benefits that the rest of us receive.

You mean, the salary isn't adjusted based on location?

Salary is negotiable on an individual basis and many factors are taken into consideration. The key here is we're not looking for the lowest bidders, getting the most employees for the least cost is not one of our goals. Gaining advocates in a region where we have a datacenter, that differs widely from the cultures most of us know first hand, is a big part of this.

Heh, if that's true, I'd consider moving to India to live on a US tech wage.

Extremely unlikely. They'll pay well for India but nothing comparable to US wages.

That's the dream of many I know in corporate America - make themselves indispensable enough so that they can negotiate remote working status with their company and get out to a lower cost state or out of the country completely.
