@Nekki If you want dumber than dumb storage, there's always JBOD. :D

When will JBODoIP hit? (JBOD over IP). No redundancy of course, with individual pars running as either non-raided or raid-0/JBOD disks.

    dumb storage.

Fine, I'll offer 2TB write-only storage on my /dev/null device.

As long as you have an unbranded WHMCS, I'm in!

  • You doing some illegal IPTV? LOL

@nekki My plex storage box is totaling 13TB a month on traffic for ~8TB of content - 500+Hrs of streaming per month

    Did a speedtest for you:

    user@host:~$ dd bs=1M count=1M if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null
    1048576+0 records in
    1048576+0 records out
    1099511627776 bytes (1.1 TB) copied, 57.2701 s, 19.2 GB/s

With these speeds I could probably ask a bit more for the service.

Daaaaaamn.. BitBucketStorage IS GONNA BE HUGE!

  • Seems a disappointing end to my search. Dunno what to do now, going to have to come up with a plan B....

  • On the one hand you say

Nekki said: I would like some storage, and a lot of it, but I don't need a lot else to go with it,

but then you reject non-KVM offers, so it seems like your requirement is actually a bit specialized. I'd just use non-KVM (like the transip offer, or an openvz, or Hetzner KVM with sshfs StorageBox) and do some client level encryption on the vps itself.

    They're not conflicting statements.

Lots of KVM storage isn't really that specialised a request, is it?

Yes it is imho. When I track cheap storage offers, I track everything: kvm, openvz, ftp, block storage, cloud, whatever. There's not that much kvm out there, especially monthly. ZXhost just had a terrific KVM offer, but it was annual. time4vps has monthly but it's openvz, Digicube has ridiculously cheap ftp for its dedi customers, etc. So you have to be flexible if you want cheap.

If you say so, not really been a problem for me to get in the past but I guess there was nothing doing this time round.

I'd be interested to know what you got in the past. All the interesting KVM offers that I currently know of are in the US. And they tend to be more expensive than other approaches because the disks are harder to oversubscribe (oversubscription is not a problem as long as the host stays on top of actual usage).

Can't recall precise prices (I've lost track of spending again), but I've got 1TB for about $20/year, 750GB for around €12/year which are the ones off the top of my head.

    Edit: these are both EU.

Who are the providers if you don't mind my asking?! Those prices are in the promo giveaway/too good to be true range. You can't expect to find anything like that on a regular basis. Anything under 0.01/GB/month counts as cheap in my book. 0.004/GB is close to the bottom except for weird plans like C14 or Hubic or certain types of ACS abuse.

I don't expect to find them on a regular basis, I have just been fortunate that people have been prepared to cut deals when I've asked in the past, which ideally is what I was looking for this time around. I do have one potential offer incoming, but not sure if it'll arrive in time.

1TB was ZXHost and the 750GB was HostSolutions.

ZXHost did 1TB KVM for $45/year in 2015 and $48 more recently, but never $20/year as far as I know. Is the offer thread still around? I'd like to track it. Similarly for HostSolutions 750GB. They just did a 400GB OpenVZ offer for 38 euro/year ($8.43/TiB/mo) so they've had to back away from super low storage pricing. Those are incredible deals and I want to sign up :)

I think they were one-offs because I asked for something specific, not available to anyone else.

ZXHost Plan was $24/year, just checked.

Wow, thanks, that's good to know. If you still have that plan and want to get rid of it, I'm sure there will be plenty of takers if it's transferable ;)

  • @Nekki - separate question: If you're using encrypted file systems on KVM's, how do you reload the key if the thing reboots?

I'm not actually at the point of doing anything yet, so I'll let you know if/when I solve that little conundrum.

  • @willie (and @Nekki), just as an FYI, there was a discussion related to KVM and LUKS and getting the key loaded at boot (see: https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/93920/making-kvm-reinstalls-less-painful - near the end is where there are some ideas/options/objections etc. - with yours truly commenting as well).

Nothing foolproof (yet - please share if you have better ideas) but "good enough" I suppose.

(not to hijack this discussion but just pointing out to avoid repeating here).

I can arrange a custom KVM deal with 2TB storage located in OVH France under KS-2E price. PM me if interested.

Can you offer more? 2TB was my minimum, but I'm interested in higher volumes if available.

    I believe 3TB is maximum.
