The only strange occurrence was their support saying they would not support wildcard MX because "they shouldn't be used in the real world" and that they don't intend to support them.

I use ACME to call CF domain API from a box behind a fw to issue wildcard certs. ACME will handle the DNS validation, and the box is not exposed to the internet at all.
