I'd like to know this too!
You might want to search smartctl tools
Install first
sudo apt-get install smartmontools
Command for hours info
smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep -e Power_On
Command for smart test
smartctl -I /dev/sda

Thats a well used hard drive. Do the smart test to detect if there are any errors
Just out of interest, is there any quick and easy way of finding this out on a Windows box?
@nimdy
think you still need to install something, HD Tune and speedfan comes to mind.
smartmontools is available on windows as well. http://www.smartmontools.org/wiki/Download
