Most likely Japan. Depending on the telco used, it could also be europe region. But for 80+% of cases japan.

In general, for most of China, JP>HK>SG>EU≈US

Thats why nodeseek users are using scripts and bots to hunt greencloud Japan Softbank (abbreviated as sb) or the IIJ routes.

In general, check if their routing to China uses premium routes or not.

OP and I had said it before in this thread and I'll say it again. China had 3 major telco. Each of them had their own premium international routes. To be "China optimized", it can mean:

    • just optimized for that telco, as in it just had that telco's premium network (nicknamed XX快乐鸡, where XX is the telco name, translates to "XX happy chicken", because chicken pronounced exactly the same with servers in mandarin)
    • Optimized for two telcos (二网优化 two telco optimized, XXYY快乐鸡)
    • Optimized for all 3 telcos (三网优化 three telco optimized)

Hence, either use those test websites and preform a traceroute to and from China, use one of the many network test scripts (of questional security) on nodeseek. Then use an LLM to search if the ASN/ip ranges correspond to those premium international transits.

Can't judge the first trace, the key hops 6–8 is hidden. But I'd say the second trace looks like using CN2 GIA route, which is the premium route of China Telecom.

I think @SodaWithoutSparkles has offered a lot of informations, great thanks. Let me supply some extra ones. Generally,JP has the lowest latency, but it most depends on the telco used. For example, most of the cheap VPS with China-optimized routes in Japan use SoftBank as their upstream. But because of the increasing user number and congestion, the latency is becoming worse for China Telecom/Unicom during peak hours , as shown in

Of course, there are some other choices. For example,China Unicom has its own “快乐鸡” (happy chicken/machine), alibaba cloud JP:

And there are some more expensive VPS with routes well-optimized for all three carriers, we called it gen2, named by the upstream provider V.PS.

Sadly, most of their cost-effective or promo products are out of stock. You can only get one at a high premium on the second-hand market, or buy their regular products at full price. They do often have sales around Christmas though. I'm also waiting for a promo like that o:)

you can apply one in TGbot. But as far as I know, applications from TG accounts registered with non-Chinese (+86) phone numbers are reviewed in batches periodically, so they take longer to get approved.

Is there a China IP I can test against? I seem to have a lot of Chinese customers.

Not a mainland china user, but I often use these sites for checking the network conditions in China.

In China, the network is divided between 3 major telco: China Telecom, China Unicom, and China mobile. And the network condition also heavily depend on each province. Each telco had their special premium international routes (e.g. the famous cn2 gia / AS9929 / CMIN2). The international outbound routes are often congested during night peaks (e.g. 18-23 UTC+8). There's also cross-province transit billing and per-province firewall policy, so your latency to one telco's network in one province doesn't necessary translate to the performance in next province (or even next city).

Thank you! That is good to know about the three telecoms.

I definitely find ping.pe the easiest to use.

That was from Wireguard, so there's +60ms or so.

Of course, you can use these CDN nodes for TCP ping testing. They originally shared here in nodeseek.

For latency and bandwidth test, we usually use this script. Although the results is shown in Chinese, i think it is easy to understand from the numbers.

    That is helpful!

I used to think zstaticcdn was something to do with Zillow, ha.

    https://tcpquality.ibsgss.uk/r/xx8_koto1p

It seems like all were good but one?

I saw ipinfo.cv in the thread. Reminds me a lot of ipinfo.io. Anyway, this is what I'm seeing for IPv4:

    And IPv6:

At some point I would like to announce over my own ASN. The v6 block is my own allocation. I'm renting the /24 from an actual ISP. I think at some point, the residential tag will go away.

Interestingly, Github assets seemed to be blocking me over IPv6 but not IPv4.

From my home Starlink connection, browsing homedepot.com has all kinds of errors on search pages (but works from my phone?) Through Wireguard and out through Slow Servers / Ardent, I didn't have any issues. I checked one of the CGNAT Starlink IPs on ipinfo.cv, and the IP quality was very good.

I guess there's two concerns for many Chinese users. One is if IPs get blocked trying to access AI stuff (so residential is best) and the other is transit quality back to China. Is that right? There must be cases where you have one of those, but not both.

Thats why there's a distinction between "落地鸡" (landing chicken) and "线路鸡/中转鸡" (route chicken/intermediate chicken).

The 落地鸡 (landing chicken) might have terrible connectivity to China, but it doesn't matter. As long as it can "unlock" LLM providers, netflix, reddit, or various other service, it can be a good landing chicken. The most premium quality landing chicken had your own residential IP, and your neighbours (in the same subnet) are behaving themselves. Others who couldn't affort it resort to sharing an IP with others via NAT KVM or LXC.

The 线路鸡 (route chicken) need to have good connectivity to China. Usually they would be the XX快乐鸡 or the 三网优化 ones talked before. Then we would use socks5/shadowsocks/wireguard etc to route the traffic ourselves.

There are also Dual ISP options that combines both, so you get 2 interfaces with 2x ipv4, and forward the packets to the right interface.

@HeavySword said: you can apply one in TGbot. But as far as I know, applications from TG accounts registered with non-Chinese (+86) phone numbers are reviewed in batches periodically, so they take longer to get approved.

Not +86 too, it only took a few days in my case, fyi
