Thanks for the giveaway! Does AS4658 have optimized routes to mainland China, especially China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile? Are there any plans to improve the routing in the future?

Thanks! We do have optimal China direct connections but they are currently reserved for only customers who pay a higher premium. We totally understand that vast number of internet users in China desire better connectivity, but some market forces had decided that direct China connection with HK will be very expensive, for some reason. Therefore, it is economically not feasible for any provider to offer below cost direct connectivity to serve those customers in China who desire affordability. May be internet users in China can do something about this situation? Or may be some structural change is needed for this to change.

Thanks for the generous giveaway! Do you have a test IP or looking glass for the HK location? I'd love to check latency from Vietnam first. If I win, I'd use it as a personal WireGuard VPN and a small monitoring node.

Basically I would like to use it to monitor my nodes and servers.

    AND

I also want to test and play arround with geo dns in the powerdns environment, to learn how it's been used, how to configure, improve page speed of specific sites (having a docker container directly on the same node for first response time reductions and so on). This will be the most far away server from my current infra. - so basically perfect :)

Interesting offer. Question about AS4658: which transit providers do you use, and is there a looking glass where I can test routing from Asia before entering? Also curious whether IPv6 is included on these boxes.

    https://lookingglass.netfront.net/ Yes, ipv6.

Thank you for this great opportunity! Since AS4658 has been around since 1995, I'm curious: what has been the most interesting change or challenge in the Hong Kong networking landscape that your team has experienced over the decades?

To us, the most interesting change is HK becoming the internet exchange point for Asia during the initial development of the Internet, though this has now bee> @Edmond said:

The organization responsible for AS4658 is 2012 Limited. How did your company decide on this name? It doesn't seem that AS4658 was registered in 2012.

Although AS4658 has multiple transit providers, it appears some prefixes are restricted to certain transit providers. Which upstreams will this VPS have access to?

We had a company restructuring during 2012, and 2012 Limited become a holding entity for netfront.

We use ddos blackholing to protect our clients and may be some prefixes were not propagated by all providers.

    Thanks!

Does AS4658 support a good peering to North America and Europe? Hurricane Electric upstream seems not a good choice. Why Hurricane Electric?

We use multiple transit providers and HE should not be the only path available. We are looking to optimize this too! As far as our customers concern at this point, routes to north America are very good most of the time, and our redundancy looks solid too. https://lookingglass.netfront.net/

Would love to join! I'm in Chengdu and plan to use it as a small HK relay plus a personal blog and some monitoring scripts. Quick question about AS4658: does traffic to mainland China go through HKIX peers, or mainly through your regular transit? Thanks for the giveaway!

Most of the traffic into China are via our regular transit providers, and a small proportion via HKIX peers if some peers do announce some IPs and IPv6s, like some academia.

Does your network pool still retain historical IPv4 allocation blocks dating back to the 1990s, and what challenges do you face in maintaining a clean reputation for these legacy IP addresses today?

Yes, the IP blocks aged like wine lol!

It is quite difficult to maintain good reputation, but we trying our best, kicking bad actors, separating different types of clients into different blocks, and make the IPs static with the customer.

Thanks Netfront AS4658 for hosting this giveaway on LET!

Quick question about AS4658: What are your primary core businesses and main customer segments in Hong Kong, and how does this promotional VPS line complement your primary services?

    Good luck to everyone!

Our primary business is connecting data centres, serve telcos and customers in data centres, and serve businesses with traditional hosting, email and broadband services. We started using our spare bandwidth and hardware to provide cloud services a few years ago and it has served many of our customers compute and storage requirements. We promote our service here so to connect with LET networking nerds, for new businesses, and looking if we will be able to add any value to the community.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

I would use this VPS as a small Asia-Pacific networking and connectivity lab. I run my own mail infrastructure and would like to investigate how SMTP connections, TLS negotiation, and IPv4/IPv6 connectivity behave when tested from Hong Kong rather than Europe.

I would also use it to compare network routes, latency, packet loss, and path MTU towards servers in Europe and the US; test DNS resolution through different public resolvers; and measure HTTPS connectivity and transfer performance across regions.

Since the offer also includes VPN access to around 20 destinations, I would be interested in comparing latency, throughput, and routing behaviour between those VPN endpoints and the native Hong Kong connection. This would be a useful way to explore how different network paths affect real-world connectivity.

One question about AS4658: since the VPS is advertised as being right next to HKIX, does its network have direct peering at HKIX, and if so, which routes or networks are directly reachable through that peering?

Thanks for giving the community an opportunity to experiment with your network!

Thanks! Great plan! That's what we do all the time!

HKIX provides a looking glass you can check the destinations reachable via HKIX: https://www.hkix.net/hkix/hkixlg.htm

btw, @netfront do you support Alipay+ -cross-border payment?

What's the difference between your 3 Cloud Service Zones?

They are just physically in three different locations across HK, and they provide backup service to each other, so that if one of the data centres get completely nuked we still have backup data lol!
