I used to name mine based on what OS they had in numerical order - lin1, lin2, lin3, win1, win2.
More recently though I name them based on their function gs1 (game servers), dns, bu1 (backup), vpn, dev.
Just call them as the type NameofDatacenter-1, NameofDatacenter-2 so easier for control
Personally, I call mine by the host, like bluevm.domain.tld If more, cvps1 or cvps-ovz
At home I call them like prox-deb-ovz for the OVZ on the proxmox server or tor1, tor2 for the function. No imagination. I know... You have to do this when you dont have a good memory.

Four byte random hex prefixed by use/environment (e.g. dev, prod) to avoid collisions. Environment might contain location encoding if its usage dictates it.
I tried cutesy names in the past but found it wasn't any better at being memorable or decipherable than random hex after a long time away.

Used vps01, vps02 etc several years, but I have now changed my system to function$. It tells more about the server, then just vpsxx.
I call them by a series of numbers with exactly 3 dots inbetween. I even allow my providers choose those numbers for me.. lucky me they are all unique...

We use s#.location for our new Feathur nodes. We previously used s#.plans.location (IE s2.c34.tx). Before that, we used elements, and that was a mess. Potassium and Sodium kept misbehaving, probably because the DC didn't keep their humidity at the right levels.
I used to name everything after transformers, but I ended up losing track of what was what after I got to about 8 servers. Now it's all in the format country name-function
Earlier I named them after girl names I like. Now I just call them VPS1, VPS2 etc.
I use colors to identify servers, not the common ones, but names like aeneous, azuline, castory, etc which can be represented by a HEX Value.
I prefer geographic names like the names of counties or the names of rivers. The lead IT guy at the university where I work is originally from Alaska so many of the hostnames in our department are based off of obscure Alaskan landmarks.
Yeah, that can get dangerous very quickly :P
I use the cryptonyms of the Axis.
Personal ones are usually Mustang car names. (Shelby, etc...)Client ones are usually sci-fi ones. (Myra, etc...)The new business ones I have just decided to uses Yu-Gi-Oh card names to name them. (Exodia, etc....) Do not ask me why I do not have a clue why I did it this way.
Personally I use the provider's name followed by "host" and then location, "-", functionality. For example, I would name a DigitalOcean VPS running Ghost blog in the Amsterdam 2 datacenter as "dohostam2-ghost".
