  • These screenshots show the disk I/O issues I've been experiencing with DeluxHost. The problems have been recurring almost since I purchased my VPS instances, and 5 of my VPS are currently affected.

    I've reported these issues to support multiple times, but the problems keep coming back. Rebooting the VMs may temporarily restore access, but it doesn't solve the underlying issue.

    It's particularly frustrating that this has been going on for so long, leaving multiple VPS unreliable or completely unusable. Judging by the reports from other customers in this thread, this doesn't appear to be an isolated case.

    @DeluxHost will investigate the root cause and provide a permanent solution rather than repeatedly relying on reboots.

  • Our DeluxHost VPSs: measurements from 7 to 12 October

    A follow-up to our earlier post. We run six DeluxHost VPSs in the Netherlands (F-4, Z-4 and L-4) in a small Kubernetes cluster. Next to them run four VPSs at another provider with the same operating system and workloads. Everything below comes from our own monitoring: CPU steal measured inside each VPS, disk I/O, and ping probes every 15 seconds from Frankfurt, Coventry and Amsterdam.

    We hold every VPS to the same bar. Over 72 hours:

    • CPU steal below 5% on average
    • no storage stalls
    • packet loss below 1%

    In this post the six VPSs are called VPS A to VPS F, the same labels as in our earlier post:

    VPS Plan
    A, E F-4
    B, C, D Z-4
    F L-4

    Our VPSs at the other provider meet that bar easily: about 1% steal, 0.1% loss and 20 ms round trips.

    TL;DR: after the migrations of 6–7 October, none of the six DeluxHost VPSs meets that bar. The disk freezes are gone, but CPU steal, packet loss and outages are not. We have asked DeluxHost for a refund.

    Six VPSs, last 72 hours

    Figure 1. Last 72 hours against our bar

    Last 72 hours: CPU steal 6.3–13.2% on all six VPSs against a 5% target, packet loss 1.3–4.5% against a 1% target, round trips 106–473 ms; our other provider: 1.0% steal, 0.1% loss, 20 ms

    • CPU steal is 6–13% on every VPS. On the same workloads at the other provider it is about 1%. Our own processes use only 8–22% of the CPU, so we are not filling the VPSs.
    • Packet loss on four of the six is about 4%, with round trips of about 450 ms. On the other two it was 1.3–1.4%. For comparison, to our other servers loss is 0.1% and round trips are 12–40 ms.

    CPU steal never reaches the target

    Figure 2. CPU steal per VPS, 7–12 October

    CPU steal per VPS from 7 to 12 October: all six are above the 5% target most of the time, two at 10–20%; our VPSs at another provider stay at about 1%

    Right after the migrations, steal on four VPSs dropped to 4–6%. Since then it has crept back up to 7–9%, with evening peaks of 10–15%. VPS B and VPS F stayed at 10–20% for most of the week, and only dipped to 6–10% today.

    At 05:45 UTC on 8 October, four VPSs jumped to 55–74% steal in the same five minutes.

    Packet loss, hour by hour

    Figure 3. Packet loss per hour, 7–12 October

    Packet loss per hour from 7 to 12 October: four VPSs are above 1% almost every hour, with several outages; our other provider is green throughout

    • Four VPSs (A, C, D, E) lose 3–10% of packets most hours. They move together hour by hour, which looks like one shared host or uplink. The loss is the same over the public address and over our encrypted tunnel, and the same from all three of our locations, so it is not one route.
    • 7 October, 16:50–18:20 UTC: all six VPSs were unreachable from outside DeluxHost.
    • 8 October, about 07:00–10:50 UTC: VPS B and VPS F were mostly unreachable.
    • 12 October, from 20:03 UTC: VPS C and VPS E dropped off the network without any change on our side. VPS C came back after about 15 minutes. VPS E is still unreachable at the time of writing.
    • The good news: VPS B and VPS F have had no packet loss since about 21:00 UTC on 11 October.

    Storage is fixed

    The disk freezes we reported in September, when the virtual disks stopped completing I/O for 20–70 minutes at a time, are gone. There has not been a single frozen minute on any of the six VPSs since the migrations. Credit where it is due.

    Where this leaves us

    These problems have run since early September, across four tickets and two rounds of migrations:

    • 36–65% CPU steal;
    • disk freezes;
    • a week of waiting for a migration that had already been agreed;
    • two VPSs that did not come back usable after it;
    • and now ongoing steal, packet loss and outages.

    Support does respond, and the storage fix shows the hardware can perform. But we pay for VPSs that work, and we have not had that from these six since we bought them. We have asked DeluxHost for a refund of the fees for these VPSs and of the remaining credit on our account.

    Related tickets: TMTNFIXBEG5CG, TMULCTBQ5KZCM, TMUN4DZW64YDO, TMUX3OSZQYYBU. Times in UTC. Per-minute data is available on request.

    Opened it on the 9th and understand it's been the weekend but when you advertise "24/7 support, response in minutes, We don't sleep and neither does your server." all over your site... (ironic on that last claim since my server seems to be sleeping beauty right now :D )

    Well, storage VPS plans don't qualify for bonuses.

  • Basic Survival Tips: If you get anything from DeluxHost. BE GLAD YOUR VPS POWERS ON FOR THE PRICE YOU ARE PAYING. Expect the least and you will not be disappointed.

    Doesn't matter if you paid Premium, Plus, VDS, Dedicated the same thing applies. o:)

  • Anyone else seeing IPv4 network issues in Amsterdam?

    I would raise a ticket, but I already got two open on other topics, so can't open another one, and I don't want to interfere with ongoing tickets, and thus delay their resolution. Also interested in what other people see.

    There was a longer network interruption yesterday, I guess related to the issue also mentioned on the status page. But ever since connectivity came back, there's been elevated packet loss, sometimes more, sometimes less. All three of my IPv4-enabled VPSes in Amsterdam are affected. IPv6 seems unaffected.

    Hi, I recently purchased a VPS from you.

    I noticed the disk I/O performance is extremely low. I ran a fio benchmark on /dev/vda3 and got around:

    fio Disk Speed Tests (Mixed R/W 50/50) (Partition /dev/vda3):

    Block Size 4k (IOPS) 64k (IOPS)
    Read 21.50 KB/s (5) 238.59 KB/s (3)
    Write 21.50 KB/s (5) 251.90 KB/s (3)
    Total 43.00 KB/s (10) 490.49 KB/s (6)
    Block Size 512k (IOPS) 1m (IOPS)
    ------ --- ---- ---- ----
    Read 655.36 KB/s (1) 355.32 KB/s (0)
    Write 733.18 KB/s (1) 441.34 KB/s (0)
    Total 1.38 MB/s (2) 796.67 KB/s (0)

    The VPS is currently almost unusable for anything involving disk access. Even basic package operations and system tasks feel very slow.

    I understand this is a low-cost VPS service and that storage prices have increased recently. However, since you decided to run this promotion and sell more units, I can accept the performance not being perfect, but I cannot accept it being this slow.

    Like others in the thread, I'm waiting for a ticket response from you. - For an issue which you said yesterday would be taken care of.

    Ticket #TMV57BWK08573

    Z-3 service has been unusable in the 6 days since purchase due to severe I/O limitations. You pitched a service migration which I approved twice. It hasn't been performed.

    It really feels like nothing was done and this was just a copy-paste reply to calm users down.
    The disk I/O problem is still there, and the VPS performance is basically unchanged.
