    Thank you for offering this!

I would like to use this to have my first outpost in Asia. About questions: With you being in / out of China are there any rules someone should know? Is HK a good relay into China? Sorry, if these are noob questions =)

    Hardware owned or leased?
    IPv4 owned or leased?
    Datacenter name and address?
    Datacenter has fire extinguishers?
Datacenter has two very scary guard dogs?
BGP session provided with automatic RPKI updates?
    IXP ports availability?
    IPv4 has rDNS setting?
    Price for extra IPv4 address?
Price reduction for not needing any IPv4 address?
    IPv6 on-link or routed?
Extra IPv6 allocation can be requested?
    IPv6 has rDNS setting?
    IPv6 has rDNS delegation?
    Billing panel licensed or nulled?
    VPS control panel?
Custom ISO supported on KVM service?
Hypervisor running vulnerable kernel to avoid reboots?
    YABS report?
    Maximum allowable persistent CPU usage?
Suspend or throttle if exceeding CPU and I/O fair use?
    Memory is ballooned?
Blast the port 330TB/month allowed on unmetered services?
Bandwidth counted both directions or only egress on metered services?
    Mail ports blocked?
    DMCA ignored?
    Customer ID verification needed?
    Refund if customer refuses/fails KYC?
Fee for service transfer between billing accounts?

    Thank you for the questions!

    • we own and installed the hardware, we touch quite often.
    • we own the AS and the IP addresses
    • Data Centre in Tai Po and Kowloon Bay, has power redundancy and fire extinguisher. The same DCs also serve big name cloud providers and satellite stations for HK. Never seen dogs.
    • Routinator for RPKI, but right now mostly Accept
    • IXP ports available right at our rack, through our layer 2 connection via telcos
    • rDNS for both v4 and v6, but not automatic, has to do it via ticket
    • Extra IPv4 depends on customer, mostly in the range $5 if customer is technically savvy
    • SLAAC IPv6, if customer request can assign larger block
    • Billing panel is WHMCS, licensed
    • VPS control panel of course. We provide snapshot services for all VPS, and remove/delete/rebuild via panel. Actually, our service is in the concept of "resources". For details, please read https://hosting.netfront.net/ knowledge base section (not much info there, but we will add more taking advantage of your questions!)
    • Custom ISO not recommended, but can request with ticket
    • No, host nodes get rebooted
    • YABS report in original post
    • CPU can occupy 100% persistent, only limited by hypervisor configured core and CPU weight for the vps
    • Bandwidth throttle to 10Mbps after 1TB for this particular giveaway
    • No balloon request from host. Individual templates may have balloon driver installed (by default??), but host do not use it. We save memory mainly with KSM (therefore the shared templated recommended)
    • Unmetered is unmetered at Netfront. Only pipe width is the limit
    • One thing forgot to mention in original post, bandwidth is counted BOTH directions
    • Mail ports not blocked. But IP not to be swapped if getting bad reputation
    • We do not deliberately ignore any law, DMCA included. But enforcement all according to HK law. If DMCA is not enforceable in HK, then it will get ignored.
    • No customer id verification for now
    • Refund
    • No fee for transfer, for now

Count me in — thanks Netfront for hosting this!

Question about AS4658: since you mention being incredibly open about a recent incident, is there a public post-mortem or status page where we can read about what happened and what changed? Curious how a long-running ASN like yours handles transparency.

If I win, my planned use is a low-traffic personal VPN/monitoring node in Asia — Hong Kong next to HKIX is a great spot for that.

    Good luck everyone!

Question about AS4658, why so many invalid ROA?
    https://bgp.he.net/AS4658#_prefixes

We use the standard :666 community to blackhole DDOSed IP addresses in /32 to some of our transit providers who does entertain :666. And we constantly announce ipv4 .0 and .255 /32 to the blackholes, because we never used those addresses, and also to test if the :666 announcements work. But RPKI does not have /32 associations. Therefore you see those invalid ROA. Happy to meet some real nerds who know and look into stuffs!!

    1. I am already a member here as you can see
2a. Question about AS4658: Why are you here? You're an established business, so why targeting the low-end and unmanaged side of hosting?
2b. Question about services: where are your terms of service in English? Usually there's some link at the footer of the website for terms and policies, but I can't see this on Netfront.
    2. My reason is simple: testing your service, doing some benchmarks, checking the peering, checking connection for personal and casual VPN in Asia (I'm from EU).

EDIT: Forgot to tag you — @netfront

Thank you! We are a very small team indeed, not that we call ourselves established business. We are here at LET because, this is actually the first time we "come out" and do some social media marketing, and because deep down we are also networking nerds, enjoying doing what we doing! We do not see LET community as really low-end, we see members asking very sensible and "know the stuff" questions.

Our standard vanilla terms of service is at https://hosting.netfront.net/termsandconditions/termsandconditions.htm

    Thank you!

  • would be nice to have something in HK finally, most of my stuff sits in US/EU and asia latency is painful. probably a small reverse proxy + uptime monitor, maybe a wireguard endpoint for when i travel

    q: is the IPv6 a routed /64 or just a single address?

Given AS4658’s long history and extensive peering at HKIX, I’m curious about your routing strategy.

Do you have direct peering with China Telecom (AS4134/AS4809), China Unicom (AS4837/AS9929), or China Mobile (AS58453), or is mainland China traffic primarily routed through HGC and other upstream transit providers?

Also, do you use different routing policies for outbound and return traffic?

We announce our routes to China via our transit providers, each of them has peering arrangement with the three telcos of China. We also maintain some more direct transit to china, but they are expensive therefore mainly reserved for use by select data centre customers. We fine tune our outbound and inbound policy to achieve traffic balance among our transit providers.

I'd use it as a relay node close to mainland China (I'm in Guangdong on China Mobile). Question: how does the return route to CN mobile/telecom look from AS4658, direct via HKIX peers or through one of your transits?

Traffic into China mainly via our current transit providers.

Ask a question about AS4658, or state your planned use of this perpetual $1/Year VPS in this thread!

This sounds perfect for some small projects and a static website. I'd also love to try your VPN with 20 world destinations.

Our VPS customers can buy unlimited VPN accounts and we are building a provisioning script to help our customers use the VPN service on their cloud instances to manage traffic.

I’d love to use this VPS as a Hong Kong monitoring node for my open-source VPS management project. I maintain a small fleet of servers across different regions, and a Hong Kong node would be very useful for network latency monitoring, IPv4/IPv6 connectivity checks, and route quality testing.

One question: Does the $1/year VPS include a dedicated public IPv4 address and native IPv6 connectivity?

    Thanks for offering this giveaway!

Yes, for this particular giveaway, they do include dedicated fixed IPv4 and IPv6. Some of our other plans actually include multiple IP addresses. You may check out https://hosting.netfront.net/, we offer our service in the concept of "resources". That you may use a set of resources to build multiple VPS. There may be LET offers shortly!

The unlimited VPN across ~20 destinations bundled with a node sitting right next to HKIX is a really practical combination for reaching regional networks from a single box. I would use mine as a lightweight uptime monitor for the few small VPS nodes I keep around, with a low-traffic personal site alongside it. One question about AS4658: with the Broadwell-generation CPU showing in the yabs, are there plans to refresh the host hardware down the line, or is the focus deliberately on network quality over raw compute?

The Broadwell CPU configuration is a common denominator to make the instances compatible to multiple CPU models, so that we can hot migrate the instances when we need to do maintenance.

Hi Netfront - thanks for running this, and welcome to LET!

Three things I didn't see answered yet:

    1) Is the $1/Year plan a KVM guest or a container (LXC)? I'd like to run WireGuard and a small Docker container, so I'm curious whether TUN and custom kernels are allowed.
    2) The "unlimited VPN to around 20 destinations" - how is that delivered in practice (WireGuard/OpenVPN configs, or a client app)? Is there a concurrent-device limit?
    3) Is the 1 TB traffic quota counted one-way or both directions?

Planned use: a small always-on node - a personal WireGuard endpoint plus a lightweight uptime/health-check agent, and maybe a static page. Nothing CPU-heavy, and the HKIX location is genuinely useful from where I am (mainland China).

    Good luck with the launch!

    Thank you!
    1. All of our VPS offers are done with KVM
    2. The VPN was tunneled through cloudflare to the final destination end points that we have total control. Client can create multiple of these VPN tunnels. We are building a provisioning script to let customers apply them to their Linux instances.
    3. Forgot to stress in first post: 1TB is the sum of BOTH directions, for now.

Hong Kong's direct bandwidth into China probably is very expensive, compared to offers in other places that is further from China geographically.

@netfront I see AS4658 has 1 Filipino IP prefix, do you intend on expanding or have you already ^^

Sorry, currently we only offer HK IP prefixes for VPS services. We may offer UK prefixes later. The Filipino IP probably is our customers.

    I like that, thanks!
