@itzsenu yes, there's an identity check. We need an ID from you for the sponsorship contract, and the RIPE NCC checks it once as well. For that we send you a link from them where you verify yourself directly with the RIPE NCC.

Ok ok Thanks Lot.... ill try that out :|

Genuine question: with that “instant termination”, do you refund the unused portion of what the customer already paid, or is it just gone?

Also, you say you don’t care how people read it, but you just posted a whole PS explaining your policy. That’s exactly what your customers and potential customers want to know before they lease from you. So how it reads clearly matters, and a clear answer on refunds would matter even more.

If you rent a pre-paid car for 48h, but you end up getting caught using it as a gateway during a bank heist GTA style after just 24h, do you get a refund for the remaining 24h?

So that’s a “no”. Took a whole GTA plot to say a two-letter word, but I’ll take it.

Love the analogy though, let’s keep driving it. In real life the renter gets “caught” by the police, charged, and the car company finds out from the court. In your version the car company is the police, the judge and the jury, and also keeps the deposit. Convenient.

And what if nobody robbed anything? Someone calls the rental desk saying “I think I saw that car near a bank”, and the car gets towed mid-trip. Is there a phone call first, or just the tow truck?

That’s all prospective customers really want to know: who decides it’s a heist, and does the customer get a chance to explain before the keys are gone?

Not sure if its a great comparison. Rental cars usually have bonds/insurances for this exact reason.

I actually kinda doubt that if I rented a car and then used it as a gateway car for robbing a bank the car dealership will care at all let alone forcefully take it back mid rental period. They will simply forward you on any speeding fines associated and if the car gets damaged, they probably wont give you back the bond you paid for it,

And if I paid extra $ for the all coverage insurance, they will care even less I suspect.

Note: The above is just my theory/opinion about car rentals. I have not, nor plan to, tested this theory out

Sure it was a more plastic way of telling what it's pretty obvious to anyone rational: Using one's service against their ToS does not qualify for a refund (which is also mentioned in the ToS). Else I would rent out IPs like crazy, spam 10 days the shit out of them, then ask for a refund for the remaining 20 days.

In our situation - like I'd guess yours is as well (but correct me if I am wrong) - you won't refund a guy after you get an official authority request to stop providing the service.

If the FBI call my car rental company and says I used it for a bank heist, so they use self-driving to bring it back to their lot in the middle of my rental period, and three years later the FBI admits it was the wrong car...

I remember you adding the range yourself on Spamhaus Policy Blocklist Portal as the IP owner and terminating my lease without refund. There was zero abuse report. No email was sent.

lol, the people aggressively arguing about how they should be allowed to abuse IPs have the exact type of websites you would expect, marketing directly to people that abuse IPs.

Just to bring this back on track, since it keeps drifting: nobody (at least not me) is arguing that abuse should be allowed. Spam, CSAM, an authority request: cut it off, no question. Credit where it’s due, providers who actually act on that are doing the right thing.

The question was never whether to terminate. It’s how:

When a report comes in, does the lessee get notified and given time to respond or explain?
If only a few IPs out of a /24 are involved, is it the whole block or just the problem?
And if the lessee never got that chance, on what basis are the prepaid months kept?

So far every answer in this thread has been about bank heists and the FBI, not about the everyday case. That’s the one prospective lessees actually care about, and no provider here has addressed it yet.

Usually most providers allow a 24 upto 72h for the end-user to respond. Depending on the report's severity.
Usually, the provider simply forwards the report to you and your reply (if explanation is needed) to the reporter.
Usually, the provider has had himself abuse from its clients and knows that a couple abusing IPs (eg 2,3,5,10x) are not the end-user's fault. (That changes when we're talking big: 50,60,128x).

Regarding termination, in our case, we only terminate instantly if the overall use-case is intended to break our ToS. No refunds in that case.
If we need the IP block back, we usually announce with plenty of time before the next supposed renewal (6+mo for yearly leases, 3+ mo for monthly). We don't terminate mid-term, except if ToS is heavily violated. //EDIT: We also allow a couple months more AFTER the due date, to facilitate migration to a new IP subnet. Client can waive this if he believes will do it before due date.

If you leased the subnet for 2 years and after 6mo you realize you don't actually need it anymore; it's understandable and we'll try to refund remaining months only if we have a real interest in getting back the subnet earlier. Else, it's kinda: not really our fault your projections were not met.
