[HELP] post-Laptop retirement | Which NVMe to pick |1x PCIe 4.0 | 2x PCIe 3.0| $1000 budget

rpqurpqu Member
edited September 15 in Help

Dear LET,

I decide to my retire my laptop because I thought it's about time I replace my main machine.
similar spec and situation to @host_c's previous laptop
Now, I'm in unfamiliar situation, as it have these NVMe slots:

  • 1x PCIe 4.0
  • 2x PCIe 3.0

Unfortunately, it doesn't have slot for 2.5" HDD, so, which drive I should choose considering the following:

  • Heavy dev usage
  • Will be running close to 24/7/365 except when I turned it off for travel
  • Last more than 7 years (10y is ideal)
  • Okay with vibration & shocks

I happened to purchased 1x WD IX SN530 2TB nvme for $220 on a whim, should I cancel it?

Budget: below $1k to populate all the 3 slots.
(plan with deferral until AI bubble pops is welcome, as I'm going to upgrade the ram gradually to 128GB DDR4)

Yes, the HDD power on hour is 5 digits.

Doesn't say much, that could be a year or a decade. I don't think I own a drive that doesn't have at least 5 digits of power-on hours...

It does remind me though, my main pc's HDD is dying at the worst possible time, but hey, at least I got ~5 years out of it. I can hear it dying when I'm working :(

  • how about pm9a1 2tb with 2 kioxia bg4 1 tb? i'm using oem ss for 5 heavy db vms just fine

    Update @itzsenu @mphteam
    Now
    1. WD IX SN530 2TB (5,200 TBW)
    2. SAMSUNG PM9A1 2TB (1,200TBW) (Actually want Micron 7450 PRO 1.92TB but very expensive $450+)
    3. ?
    Remaining budget $550

I'd rather stayed away from WD: out of 4 drives 1 died within 3 months, 3 others behave "funny": full read spead while files are fresh, after 3-4 moths speed drops to 30-40%.

    Statistically, the problem is you.

Unless you run 24/7/365 IO intensive apps that need 100K iops @ 4K, it will make zip shit importance for a desktop/laptop the PCI-EX generation on the NVME you choose. Also, is you CPU up to the task to do 6 GBPS constant R/W??? The heck you got there, Ryzen AI MAX ?

Also, if it is similar to my old Panasonic CF54, it will run on GEN 3 not Gen 4 as it has no clue and never heard of Gen 4.

You sure you can pop 128GB ram in that laptop?????? it must defenetly be an AMD, as Intel sucks in that category.

Dev is one thing, long powered on hours mean 0 to a drive ( even HDD ). Bashing the shit out of it is the killer.

Last more than 7 years (10y is ideal) - now, my friend, really, 7YRS???? a consumer device?????? you ok? :D :D :D

Get a decent 3.0 drive/drives and move on. LET's have the conversation on what to buy next in 5 years ok? maybe then we will not pay 500 USD for 2TB of NVME.....

WD blue will suffice, you can go crazy on Samsung PRO, but I would not spend the premium

PS: I also ditched my new DELL I7 Ultra, moved to M4, and with this I divorced MSFT 4 LIFE, but that is another off-topic discussion. ( why? well now I have 14-16H of battery life , yeeeee )

I used a Dell Precision 7530 for about a year. Never had any issues with it. Only downside was the battery life, around 1 hour.

Good old days that ram was the cheapest thing :disappointed:

Hey. For context, I have severe distrust over consumer-grade hardware. I still remember fondly of WD green, then SMR, and SSD issues. My friends NVMe drives (consumer grade) died after 2-3 years of usage.
Yes. I hope WD IX SN530 and SAMSUNG PM9A1 could last for 10Y for heavy dev usage.

I also ditched my new DELL I7 Ultra

Are you selling? I'm interested. Can ship to EU location?

PS: The seller laughed when I asked whether there's a HDD 2.5" bay. How else I put HGST HDD drive?

  • can me and @Murv populate two of the slots?

Update, going to add 1x32GB DDR4 because memory usage hover around 17.5GB (currently 2x16GB). Cost: $105 as it's used (produced on 2024).
    Current load, memory usage, uptime

@host_c Also, I need high TBW for writing the hibernate image.

    WD SN850X 2TB (~$300)
    You deserve it.

    Thanked by 1rpqu
  • @rpqu you plan on RAID1/5, or separate filesystems? Or are you perfmaxxing and putting RAID0 over 3 NVMe? :D

You say "hibernate", that's a bit risky with ZFS but otherwise, I can't recommend ZFS with sanoid+syncoid enough. My devices snapshot every 15minutes, the snapshots get pulled to my core infra storage, and then over to my offsite backup. My entire house could burn down and I would lose no more than a day of work (or savegames for that matter), as offsite syncs nightly.

The 2xPCIe 3.0 support raid 1. But, I will delay the purchase of 3rd drive for few months or a year because I don't want those drives to fail at the same time.
You got even more solid setup than mine. I just rclone it to homelab. Offline storage parity is created every month. So, when SHTF, I will pull the scratchpad drives (and PC) and bring it with me along with my laptop.

Everything supports RAID1 if you're willing enough :D Wouldn't use any raid by the BIOS/..., just mdadm or dmraid, or the modern filesystem of your choice (I think even btrfs has a functioning raid1).

    Sir, it would cost $2499

Why? can get 32gb+ m4+ for under 1k USD np beat anything even close you will find. not to mention mac battery, mac keyboard, mac screen... yh nothing else comes close.

Im rocketing a M5 AIR, M1 Mac Pro (still a daily driver, bought on release, dropped down a flight of stairs and left it on a full temp stove)

didn't see ur image, who buys brand new? are we not tech ppl? use your brain.

I only bought my M1 new since was new chip and i was overhype, I bought since m2, m3 m4, im on m5 already want m6. I buy few week after release from someone local or ebay. Return policies are great, buy one within apple warranty window, inspect it when you get it.

I got a 2K GBP AIR specced out to it's max, for 940 just 2 month after that M5 was out.

Macs are not like other machines, buy within the right window, with mac warranty available and 97%+ battery and it's a brand new machine.

Yup, you're right. A device used for few months practically has longer lifespan. And like half the price.
However, newer MacBook doesn't have removable RAM nor NVMe.
While Mac has 128GB RAM spec, soldered NVMe would make replacement very hard; And I don't it's fair to compare Apple's NVMe with Enterprise NVMe
@host_c can you stress test your M4's NVMe?

You are right, apples storage is better accros the board, there ram can l be halved to for 1. MacOS for 2. Unified memory.

As much for the majority of my life i have hated apple, since AI boom they are the smart cost effective choice, and it's not even a close race.

bare in mind you get a fully milled alumnimum chassis, best laptop keyboard, battery, build quaility in the game... half the cost of that macbook pro is the accessories, screen, speakers, ability to go pro +.

Buy an AIR? they really aren't so bad they throttle yes but they out perform 90% while throttling.

If you didn't need a laptop these specs are possible straight up for a $1k mac mini, find me anywhere that competes with those specs.

Personally, I prefer Logitech K120. It's cheap, ubiquitous, and I'm accustomed to it. The travel distance of modern keyboard is unpleasant. And I have used Mac, MacBook several times during high school, college. It just doesn't feel right.
My previous laptop also has aluminum chassis. And it bents after getting bumped, dropped (one of the reason why I got click of the death).
If Apple doesn't go their way to prevent storage/ram with commodity parts, I may have purchased it. But, I watched Louis Rossmann. Sure, it's nice to have unified memory

Just saying not done on any laptops if all honest, but soldering your own ram pads isnt hardest, templates and a steady hand upgrades both my mac minis :P
