Prometeus brand is being retired as of March 2027

MaouniqueMaounique Host Rep, Veteran

Hello!

As you probably know, Prometeus di Daniela Agro has been acquired by CDLAN Spa. a large Italian host and datacenter company which provided us with our Milano location.
That happened years ago and we prepared for this moment since then by constantly reducing stock and retiring older products.
That being said, there are still many loyal customers, some even insisting on running very old platforms which are no longer supported upstream since such times as 2019.
We had a recent security breach and decided to pull the plug while giving plenty of advanced notice to our loyal customers.
We had a blast since 1997! Thank you all who have made this possible, but time spares noone and we are retiring and taking on other, personal, projects.
All products have been set to monthly renewal and refunds will be provided at the end.
There are about 6 months left.
Thank you again, good luck everyone and have a great life!

I am sad because I started using service in 2012 or even earlier. But I am also glad.. lack of proper support, random "things" happening like switch reboots, VM's loosing connectivity and you working midnight to 7AM only (or something like that) is what made me make a plan to move out by end of next month. I wish you and Salvatore best of luck. 🫡 🍝

Thank you! There are not enough customers left to justify a full-on support team, this is another reason why we had to do this. It was planned since the acquisition and I think we reached that point. I am glad you agree.

  • Was a customer back in 2015-2016 i think... good times. Have a great life indeed!

  • As a customer since early 2018 I'm sad to read this message, but I saw it coming after the acquisition. Prometeus has been one of the best value options in Italy for years, and the Milan location has always worked well for us.

Thanks for the 6 months notice, that's more than fair. Time to start moving stuff around.

All the best to you and Salvatore!

Sad in a way. It was good, but neglected brand. I guess there will be no BF dealz from CDLAN?

That's very sad, I'm still using the Seafile service of them.

I've seen that the alternative providers are scarce and are way more expensive.

What will happen to Iperweb and OVerZold anyway?

Scarce and way more expensive -- really?

This isn't a comment against Prometeus, but it seems odd to say that the alternative providers are scarce and way more expensive, but perhaps I'm missing something

Congrats on your first post since April 2020

That line was about finding an comparable Seafile service at other providers. Some do, but you could use your hands to count them all. And they charge much more money for it than Prometeus did.

Of course I could selfhost it (seems i have to), but I prefer to not manage it (especially migrations, upgrades et al).

Out of curiosity, may I ask how much you pay for what specs? Is this a managed Seafile service?

Oh, I see, you must mean http://www.prometeus.net/site/iwsea.php or http://www.prometeus.net/site/iwseas3.php

Yes, I meant the first one. That's about Seafile. The second link is about Amazon S3.

iwSea was managed. I don't see a way to provide such a thing unmanaged anyway :D

I agree that those are good prices for managed Seafile, so I take back what I said above (sorry)

(I had misunderstood you to mean that you were running Seafile on a VPS)

    All is forgiven :)

Yeah, it was a good price. At hindsight maybe too low for Prometeus to sustain.

It was fun while it lasted, eh? :')

I wouldn't even ask what you hosted there, before you moved it to Charityhost.

    P.S.
Salvatore from Prometeus was a one man show that offered great price/quality in 2012-14.

Not really, say 1.5 men, at times 2.5 if we consider 3 other halves.

None of the prices were too low. (okay, maybe the jokes we offered at times).
But things changed, the power is more expensive, the gear too and we lack the enthusiasm of two decades ago. We are no spring chicken and have some health issues as well, it is time to leave other people, younger and more dynamic to take our place.

I never left LET, I was just banned after having some issues with the shadow operator of that time, @Francisco and then his apologist @jar
I am not here as Prometeus representative, I was here before I worked for Prometeus and will stay after it will be gone. The deals I get here for my own projects are hard to find somewhere else.

I am an Economist, Writer and IT enthusiast, also did math-physics studies and I like a lot history and psychology. It is a rare combo and it helps a lot with the writing. I was also an editor at a financial paper in the 90s and early 2000s, worked in the board of a bank etc.
I just happen to know things and how to source data for my own thought process.
