Reject provider tags when the provider does not own the ASN

edited October 5 in General

I know I know crazy take, but hear me out.

From 2027 LET should reject applications, if hosting company does not have own ASN.

  1. Do we really need another Hetzner, OVH or Leaseweb reseller? They provide almost no value.

  2. Less scams

Change my mind.

Edit. Note that it should apply only to new providers.

Why? As long as they pay money to LET and pay $200 for a LLC they will get a tag. Reseller is such a weird thing to chase honestly. I resell CDN77 network and hardware in Asia. I resell Royale's network (and some hardware since I don't own some of it.) I own a lot of servers in the US, almost all, but I still "resell" some hardware when I can't get my own hardware quick enough for important things.

All that matters is quality. Plenty of historical scammers on LET have screwed the community while having their own ASN. Anyone can get an ASN with no verification.

anyway do you want to pre-order a 4gb dallas promo server?

    +1 @MikeA for the win.

If this were to apply to existing providers, three of top 10 hosts would be deleted:

It may be reasonable to apply own ASN requirement to providers selling dedicated servers, but not to VPS and shared hosting sellers.

You are into something. Requirement for dedis only would be already a good step in a right direction.

This should not apply to existing providers. Only ones that apply first time.

Doesn't make sense to me. An entity isn't supposed to have an ASN unless it has an independent routing policy. Requiring every provider to have at least two upstreams would be a weird requirement.

Don't forget Goodhart's law - if you require this, the same providers will just go and get an ASN by following the minimal requirements and nothing will change except there will be more arguments about whether a provider should be allowed to announce an unused address block to technically fulfill the requirement, and the routing table will be a bit more bloated with unused address blocks.

If you want to say resellers have to disclose they're resellers or even just not allow resellers at all, that seems okay but ASN should have nothing to do with it.

what about if we just reject provider tags when the provider is a shitbag

Biloh should just implement AI grading for providers and have AI ban providers who don't meet the strict AI generated criteria for successful hosts.

Isn't owning ASN is easier than creating a legally registered company?

Eliminate the yearly drama of summer hosts shutting down? This is my entertainment. Don’t take away the one thing I have! 😂

    they're cheaper nowadays.

  • I'm fine with resellers. What I'd actually vote for is LET to reject providers that are using Virtualizor.

Usually you need a legally registered company to get an ASN unless you want to have the ASN in your personal name.

Also, both are just money things. Almost anyone can register a company and ASN, they just need the registration money.

You won’t be able to stop fraudulent or unprofessional business. Burst.net had its own ASN, IP addresses, offices, and so on, but it all ended in complete collapse. The large number of companies that go bankrupt every year only confirms that any business can be risky.

  • forestforest Member

Wouldn't it be easier to just have a "reseller" tag rather than straight-up rejecting them?

  • AlyxAlyx Member, Host Rep

I honestly don't understand why resellers should be seen as less.

Like, your suggestion would mean DeluxHost is totally fine, while HostDZire would not be allowed to be a provider.

  • A weird and ridiculous request lol.

You can start your own. Build your host, and do not come here.

It's easier to get into reselling which means that the flood of crappy resellers gives good resellers a bad name. They're not actually lesser, but that's why people tend to see them that way.

I think it's the resellers outside LET that's particularly crappy.

I think just having a registered, verifiable business is enough.

Let the community dig into ownership details to sniff out potential previous fraudsters and deadpoolers.

I do like that LowEndSpirit allows community voting for new providers before allowing them to advertise there. Could be done here.

    Please no,
@NDTN and @labze are both solid providers !

    Popcorn again

Don't we buy cars from car dealers because they don't have a car factory? Of course we do. Same with web hosting industry.
We need resellers. It is no good to get rid of them.
