Looking for 4-core Ryzen VPS/VDS in Germany – alternatives to Layer7

edited September 13 in Requests

Hi everyone,

I've been using Layer7 for Ryzen VPS/VDS servers and I was quite happy with their previous pricing and configuration flexibility.

However, after their website/configurator update in September, choosing 4 CPU cores now requires at least 24 GB RAM and 200 GB NVMe. These minimum requirements were not present before the update, so I'm now looking for alternatives offering something closer to what Layer7 used to provide.

What I'm looking for:

Location: Germany
CPU: Ryzen 7000/9000 series, or something with similarly strong single-core performance
CPU allocation: around 4 vCPU, preferably with a reasonable CPU share / not heavily oversold
RAM: at least 16 GB
Storage: at least 100 GB NVMe
Network: 1 Gbps port is fine
Traffic: nothing extreme; so around 10 TB/month would already be plenty
Virtualization: VPS or VDS are both fine
Budget: ideally around €10–20/month

Germany is a requirement rather than just a preference.

I'm mainly interested in getting good Ryzen CPU performance without having to pay for 24 GB RAM and 200 GB storage that I don't really need.

Which providers would you recommend? I'm especially interested in providers with a good reputation here on LowEndTalk rather than simply the cheapest possible option.

Thanks!

  • choosing 4 CPU cores now requires at least 24 GB RAM and 200 GB NVMe

    .

being forced to add 24 GB of RAM and 200 GB of storage

    .

I don't need 24 GB RAM or 200 GB NVMe

You really should state what you need, rather than what you don't need

    How much bandwidth/traffic?

  • probably @SKRIME they are in NL but very close to DE.

  • This is the performance right now on a gatewaysentry 8 vcore machine -

    Single Core | 2028
    Multi Core | 6508
    Full Test | https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/19137612

  • @SKRIME their 9950x boxes are damn blazing fast

  • Thanks everyone for the replies so far! I’ve edited the original post to make my actual requirements clearer, especially regarding RAM, NVMe storage, and monthly traffic.

That should hopefully make it easier to suggest suitable alternatives.

Thanks for the mention @rpqu! :)

@Cloudstrifeff7 We can offer you a custom configuration that should fit what you're looking for:

    Ryzen 9 9950X - Frankfurt, Germany

    4 vCores
    16 GB DDR5 RAM
    200 GB NVMe
    6 TB Traffic
    10 Gbit/s Uplink
    1x IPv4
    /64 IPv6
    KVM - Virtfusion

    €24.99/month

It's slightly above your preferred budget, but I think it should be a pretty good fit for your requirements.

If you're interested, just send me a PM and I can arrange it for you :)

    Hi,

i am sorry, i have no idea what you refer to ;-; Please give me some hint.

Short story tldr: Unfortunately necessary to limit the damage done by abusive usage of the flexibility we offer.

    Long story:

The point behind the new price model ( that also applies to all others ) is quiet simple.

Unlike 99,999% of all providers in market we are not doing static packages. Most providers give you the choice between plan a,b,c,..X and you have to pick it, no matter if you actually need all the CPU if you just want RAM or all that RAM if you just wanted CPU or disk.
EZ life for the provider. EZ resources planning for the provider.

That all works pretty well and even more easy if you are doing KYC.

But for providers like us who honor the privacy and not doing KYC by default AND offering endless flexibility with unlimited configurator's are in a double sense of disadvantage when it comes to abusive usage.

So we ended up in situations where some nice people ordered rather cheap 16 Core servers to burn compute time, without taking any RAM or Disk. As a result the hostmachines are full CPU wise but empty RAM wise. Fortunately since we use shared storage the disk issue is not that problem. But if you have tons of free disk space but no CPU capacities, you can also not sell disk space ( even you pay for it every month with the datacenter consuming space and power ).

As you can see this imbalance cost us money. And its actually quiet a lot of.

    So i had the options:

    a) introduce KYC, while its not required by law. Thats against the company DNA how i want to run it, so its no option

    b) introducing plans and removing every flexibility. Possible, but i dont like the idea of reducing the choices of people more than absolutely necessary.

    So i came up with

    c) making resource choices influencing each other. So a customer can not build anymore 4 cores and 128 GB RAM servers. Nor can they buy 16 Cores with 8 GB RAM.

At the end its some lesser evil middle way between static plans where you can decide zero ( except take or leave the whole plan ) and configurator's where you can decide anything always.

You should also consider the fact, that - again unlike most other providers - we allow our customers to upgrade/downgrade any time. Not only during order, but also during the life time of their servers. This has actually great value for the customers and makes the providers life much more complicated as planning capacities becomes much harder which results basically in having more hardware life than actually necessary to do the job, which obviously is increasing cost.

As to the custom deals: Yes i am still open for individual what ever. Especially existing customers, especially those who are longer customers and have a good standing, have always good chances to get some extra discount. If this applies to @Cloudstrifeff7 i can not tell. But if it applies, it might be worth opening a ticket and copy-paste the config from the configurator inside and ask for some extra love.

Sir when can we buy new servers?

    Hi,

existing customers can do it since 1-2 weeks.

New customers, good question. The website still states end of august... well that was obviously missed.

For now i hope within the coming week. I am still in the situation of the transition to the new software away from WHMCS and that is/was not too much easy with a 20 years old customer base of thousands of active customers in it with all kind what ever to consider and migrate too. So all kind of things and hidden issues explode right in the face and delaying the re-opening. Sorry!

    Hey @Cloudstrifeff7,

Thanks for the mention @JohnFilch123, and he's right that we sit in NL and not in DE - Eygelshoven, right on the border near Aachen.

The minimum-RAM problem you're describing doesn't exist here. Our EPYC configurator sets cores, RAM and storage independently, so 4 cores with 8 GB and 60 GB is a perfectly normal order and not something the system pushes you out of. That build comes to 8.89€/mo, or 8.00€/mo with code LET10.

One honest limitation. Our configurator runs on EPYC Zen 3 Milan with ECC DDR4, so it isn't Ryzen 7000 or 9000. Our RYZEN 9950X line exists but only as fixed plans, where 4 cores comes paired with 16 GB and 150 GB at 18.99€/mo. So if the Zen 5 single-thread performance is what you're after specifically, you'd be back in a fixed tier, just a cheaper one than Layer7's.

Traffic has no monthly allowance at all, no counter and no per-GB overage.

Thanks for your explanation! BTW, within the Disk-options, my HDD shows 100 IOPS and 75000 MB/s, but according to the specs it should be 100IOPS and 100 MB/s.

    Hi,

75 GB/s would be quiet a lot for HDD ;-)

If ever this problem becomes a real-life setting, it will be corrected.

    Thank you for your hint!
