xTom VPS lost my entire virtual disk during maintenance – no backups available

My VPS provider xTom informed me today that during emergency maintenance on their storage system, the storage volume containing my VPS virtual disk was lost.

They confirmed:

  • The data cannot be recovered
  • No backups were available

This VPS was running a monitoring service for an project, so this caused a serious service interruption.

I would like to know:

  • Is this affecting only one host/node or a wider storage system?
  • Are other customers experiencing the same issue?
  • What compensation/recovery options were provided?

Anyone affected by this incident?

Does their services / tos state they include backups? If not or they state you are responsible for backups that is your own fault, dataloss can happen at any provider and unless you normally tick a box to buy an upgrade its down to you

  • That's why you keep your own backups, kiddo.

  • thank you all for sharing, I want to see who else got infected on this one as well. You guys are right about the back ups, I should've done it.

Make sure ITZ A BIG DISK

  • You guys never learn. You have cheap 500gb storage deal with @labze for 7 fucking bucks per year. You can backup more than 10 vms, depending of the vm disk size. Even with that, you always should keep copy at home, if you are serious about your projects.. There is no excuse in this era.

What is... a backup? Sounds foreign.

I spend $7/yr and make septillions.
Backups cut into my bottom line and crying about it is free.

i'm not sure you should really expect more than an apology and maybe a few days of credit or something, these things are going to happen sometimes. if you don't like how they handled it might just mean time to move on.

First, I'm sorry that happened to you.

I get the "always have a backup!" remarks and agree but I'm still a bit disappointed because I thought that @xTom was better.

  • Thank you for the feedback, to wrap this up, the client had the back up so nothing was lost, but lesson well learned

No backups? Then data was not important. Schrug it off and continue.

Providers like xTom are known for their premium CN routing, but I tend to use it for reverse proxy only instead of running mission critical projects directly on them. Think they emphasize routing more than data protection🤔

  • My tokyo performance gen2 is fine so far, but thanks for the reminder.
Given the fairly high price, I thought v.ps would be a bit more professional than this.
