I think a lot of low end providers will survive; the prices will just go up in line with the rest of the industry (~2-4x). Moreso than the massive providers, because the profit margins are a lot smaller. Electricity is also going up in price significantly, so services on existing hardware are likely to all go up too.

I think that's probably what will happen. The low end providers won't necessarily disappear. If hardware and power costs keep climbing, the whole market basically gets pushed up and the new norm ends up being a much higher floor price.

    To reproduce those times nowadays:

    1. Use a Linux desktop because Linux is better (in my opinion)
    2. Install Audacious (you can install this on Windows too)
    3. For Linux, copy the Winamp .wsz skin from archive.org into /usr/share/audacious/Skins
    4. Enjoy (Winamp) Audacious with Winamp skin to preserve that old feeling.

    @AlteredParadox

I will update the above, this is getting ridiculous

612 USD for a 1.8TB SAS 10K RPM drive??? WTF

870 USD for a 12TB SAS 7.2K RPM drive?? the fuq, and only 12Mo warranty??

Prices are TAX and Shipping excluded.

what is next? 128 USD for a 128 GB USB Drive? I fuqing hate this economy.....

I shall not say a word about DDR5 ECC

    5470 USD for 96 GB DDR5 ECC Reg ( PC5-44800 )

Time to dig up the DDR3 and DDR2 platforms.......

    I <3 this job bar, yes I do :D :D

    Cheers!

Sadly, no. I have posted link on the cest pit from trendforce.com. Monthly shipment is down. Price goes up.
    https://www.trendforce.com/news/2026/09/01/news-hbm3e-spot-prices-said-to-be-4-5x-lta-levels-with-samsung-reportedly-locking-70-of-memory-capacity-through-2031/
So, Samsung and many other upstream are purposefully reducing the production volume or hoarding it so price goes up -> more people sign up for LTAs.

Next year, Vera rubin will provide token generation 10-18x of GB300. So, Just imagine 1 racks with 2x the capex and 2x the TDP could generate 10 racks equivalent of current gen.

Actually, I dropped my marbles, o customer of ours needs 4 U3 NVME drives, they don't like getting used stuff so they asked for new.

57921 USD + TAX, now I did send the mail to them, most probably by now they went with getting a Porsche for themselves rather then what they need :D .

Fuq me times N...... where the heck did we put that LGA 771 HP G5's?........

Might as well use DDR4 ramdisk.

Edit: last time I check DDR4 is faster than typical NVME ( I don't know about it against HBF)

s/HBF/HBM/ I guess? It's still faster. Even old RAM is quite fast, especially under write-heavy workloads.

HBF/M is High Bandwidth Flash/Memory. The difference is one it's a flash, non-volatile. While the other is equivalent to RAM.
If this crisis persist, someone is going to make module which uses DDR2/DDR3/DDR4 for storage + HDD slave

No worries. What do you think about stripping volatile memory module from GPU and other embedded system?

  • @rpqu said: What do you think about stripping volatile memory module from GPU and other embedded system?

Those are optimized for throughput rather than latency, so it might not be a great replacement for a server's memory.

I mean for the purpose of replacing current gen nvme. Those which require up to 1e6 iops
