A discussion regarding "residential" traffic and proxies

Hello,

I was reading the forum rules and I found something I thought was very surprising

That "residential proxies" are forbidden.

I thought this is curious, I have been investigating internet surveillance and tracking and it seems that one of the ways it cannot be escaped is by treating "residential" versus "datacenter" traffic differently.

I don't use VPNs, but many of my friends who do say the internet is less and less usable as their VPN traffic is in some kind of "arms war" of being profiled as being VPN traffic.

This creates issues for anyone who wishes to remain anonymous on the internet becoming marginalized more and more.

And the main reason that commercial operators can do this, is by closing any escape hatch where someone can interact with the internet without disclosing their identity (and disclosing therefore psychological, behavioural and economic profile).

In the community rules this is justified as "shady, greyhat, blackhat" behaviour that "might cause headaches for a hosting providers"

And here, we don't mean the providers of such "residential proxies" nor consumer of the "Low End Box" but the industry giants who offer "datacenter style" VPS on this forum (and presumably pay the bills here).

So, this rule is not for the benefit of forum users, not really for the benefit of hosting providers who would offer such services, it is for the benefit of those who want "residential traffic" to remain cleanly segregated as "consumer traffic" and not "datacenter traffic".

Those who benefit from being to tell by IP address alone, who that person is, what they had for breakfast and what kind if shocking picture you need to show them to alter their emotional state so that they will be more inclined to agree to vote for a certain politician or purchase a certain product.

What I am saying, what I am calling out really, is a severe conflict of interest exist in that rule.

And I don't mean whatever "sneaker bots, sneaker/streetwear proxies" is, or why would anyone care about buying shoes that much that they cause datacenter operators to have ulcers.

I mean, the rest of it, this isn't about shoes, this is about escaping pervasive digital surveillance without become a second class internet citizen, for any reasons which shall remain my own private privilege to keep for myself.

With all of that said, can we just ~talk~ about this ?

I don't really want one of those shoe buying robot or whatever, I want my privacy back and is this forum and/or its owners against that ?

    Who needs presidental proxies?
Use save VPN and nothing will leak that fast. You can all do yourself. It needs a VPS, there's plenty of it. A good and near location with good latency.

Proxies are good for browsing, but the rest is meh, better a VPN.

I imagine here the words 'VPN" and "proxies" are used interchangeably, not meaning literally a SOCKSv5 proxy and etc..

So I understand that "residential" here means an address which is not recognized to be part of the datacenter ranges and given certain privileges, such as not requiring intense captcha, anubis-style, rate limiting and other perturbation or outright denials that "second class internet citizen" vpn users have to endure for trying to protect their privacy. Or even in the case of surveillance pricing, giving VPN users as a class higher prices as punishment for not allowing their psychometric behaviour to be analyzed, recorded and resold. The goal being to create enough friction that most users will eventually just relinquish their privacy and eventually, if enough people do this, simply cut out anyone who attempts to protect their privacy.

Everything is allowed when @jbiloh permits.

Ok @Shakib maybe you can explain how are those, say the "Proxy-DC" plan differ from your average VPS (of differ from buying 250 of them an installing squid on them).

I imagine in "residential" proxy it has to do with some iana classification of the addresses as being mapped to "physical household address" rather than to datacenter. And that the various anti-ddos and surveillance/tracking/advertising/pricing system have different rules based on those classification.

Or is it just about the behaviour of the traffic from those hosts that decide everything and having a whole bunch of address just allows you to switch on the fly so no psychometric profile can be created, in theory, if you anti-fingerprinting really is good enough ?

I think @jbiloh and the admins should consider a tweak to the resproxy stuff, if they're going to allow it. They should require proof that the IPs are legitimate and not sourced from botnets/etc.

You have ranges you bought from CenturyLink? cool. You're reselling maskify? asking for trouble.

I don't think he really cares tbh, he makes more money allowing it.
