It really can be holy when you put it to good use, as proved here.
there will be a way but you will have to wait 24 hours and everything will be done under Big Brothergoogle's "supervision"
From now on Big Brother will always be there by your side to guide you, to protect you and to herd you to the slaughterhouse.
i mean you had to know this was part of the long term plan.
some custom rom are still maintained by the dev, however being newer phone keeps getting harder to be unlocked the bootloader, its gettting not worth the hassle
Won't be effected and I'm love GraphenisOS besides that it requires google hardware (graphenis has a partnership with moterola so that will be awesome)
We got Linux phone era before GTA 6
On serious note though, probably it would kill some budget phone segment without kernel source code release for past couple years, some people lucky can buy flagship/polish phone which provided kernel source code and vendor tree.
Make it even worse they pick my country (Indonesia) for first target, cause phone selling here was too silly and no way to getting phone series provided source code to reproducible making custom ROM even UBL for remove pesky play store.
Yep, good approach. I guess if you cannot live without gpay, ya you are cooked. Also, some apps are not working on Graphene coz devs were too lazy to support it.
Ddr and ymca ignor
It s posible
You mean apps dont work because devs are to scared of a free person. I've seen many apps not work because they detect a custom ROM.
Yeah, "Google Play Integrity" bullshit...
Wise keeps asking for it, but my Graphenis blocks it and Wise works just fine without it.
Yeah, basically everything would work without it but sadly there are multiple levels and the highest one is TPM based so there's no way around. Good on Wise to "just" run a basic integrity check.
Bank apps are a good example of that.
Yes, 90% of bank apps work just fine luckily and complaining helps a lot but yeah seem some horror stories. You get forced to use their app but you cant run it on graphenis, image 😭
I know this will be an unpopular opinion, and while I wholeheartedly agree Google is pure evil coming to privacy and stuff like that, to me it still feels like overreacting and fearmongering tbh. I actually prefer when developers are ID verified. I’d rather know the app isn’t made by some random anonymous dude from nowhere who can just disappear after uploading malware or scams.
Now the sideloading part, it isn’t shut down like the title makes it sound. You can still sideload unverified apps, it just goes through the advanced flow now. Like enable developer mode, do the 24-hour wait once (just once), and after that you mostly just get a warning popup before installing. It’s a bit more steps but it’s not blocked. This might even be a good thing considering how easy it is now to trick technically illiterate people into installing malware. “You got a traffic ticket, here it is, ticket.apk” and boom.
This post and keepandroidopen.org keep saying Google could change it in the future since the advanced flow is in Play Services, that is true and a real concern. Also a lot of things could happen and change in the future, not just this.
My ₹0.69
Bonus point is showing a popup every 19 minutes where you have 15 seconds to confirm.
If you miss any confirmation popup, the apk feature remains disabled and you’ll have to start over the 24-hour clock.
You really have a gift to predict what the devious minds will do next. I wish you also had the power to stop them.
Need kyc by customer soon, maybe...
Android is open source.
If you are unhappy, fork the project and build your own AOSP.
Our PinePhone is ready for testing.
Well, i don't think there's anything stopping you from not installing random apks even now, right? What's the point in enforcing it when a simple personal choice achieves the same result without hindering other people in making theirs?
Don't get me wrong, having been a user of unixoid systems for literal decades now the idea of downloading random binaries off the web is pretty alien to me too but i don't see anything wrong with it either if it's somehow needed. Also Windows users have been doing just that for like forever and they (well, at least the moderately intelligent portion) are doing fine. It's a calculated risk. I wouldn't take it for no good reason but then there's nothing forcing me just because i can.
The strange thing about this is that with technology it's seemingly perfectly fine for people to handle stuff that they obviously just aren't fit to handle. If we were talking about chainsaws and people acting stupid sawing off their limbs there would be a least a faint notion of blaming them for not knowing what they were doing.
Well, who am i kidding here? A massive amount of people would again blame chainsaws and call for regulation. They just hate not being able to mindlessly mesh buttons and that wish ruins it for the minority that wants act responsible and take calculated risks.
There's not much could about this. Google is simply testing the waters and it's bound to happen sooner or later (closed systems are just way too much of a wet dream and also stop dumb users from doing dumb stuff, which avoids negative publicity - you don't really think that people who aren't discouraged by warnings or their own lack of knowledge would be stopped by a 24h waiting period?) but i kind of agree on the second part.
Again not exactly on the could (the direction is very clear) but on the fact that there'll be a future where being able to install applications just doesn't really matter anymore. The whole user-controlled-technology thing is pretty much a lost battle. It's just a question how slow of fast the doors are being nailed shut and everyone expecting any kind of sizeable push back is delusional. Starting petitions and all that is just utterly pointless. Petitions only work when they align with the dominant agenda anyways.
Is it though or at least to what degree? Open source means that you are able to analyze and modify it as you see fit, which is only partly true for Android. The second you change it various moderately important parts stop working. Not for technical reasons but for the sole fact that you changed it and the amount of those parts is continuously increasing.
I wouldn't really want to call Android tiviolized but it's steadily approaching a quite similar result just by different means.
It's kinda similar with the EU's digital ID. They don't get tired emphasizing how it's "open source" when in reality all you can do with the source is looking at it. Openwashing is just pretty popular these days.
finally good thing for citizen/society as a whole.
