    Holy AI

It really can be holy when you put it to good use, as proved here.

Running LineageOS + MicroG, so should still be ok. I use AuroraStore, Droidify (fdroid), and Obtanium to install apps.

Custom ROMs scene still alive? I haven't mess with em since my Nexus days.

some custom rom are still maintained by the dev, however being newer phone keeps getting harder to be unlocked the bootloader, its gettting not worth the hassle

It is, though I'm running official LineageOS. I'm thinking GrapheneOS wouldn't be effected, either, but I don't have experience with that, so not sure.

Won't be effected and I'm love GraphenisOS besides that it requires google hardware (graphenis has a partnership with moterola so that will be awesome)

We got Linux phone era before GTA 6

On serious note though, probably it would kill some budget phone segment without kernel source code release for past couple years, some people lucky can buy flagship/polish phone which provided kernel source code and vendor tree.

Make it even worse they pick my country (Indonesia) for first target, cause phone selling here was too silly and no way to getting phone series provided source code to reproducible making custom ROM even UBL for remove pesky play store.

I get weekly updates from LineageOS, currently on Android 16.

However, bootloader is still open, isn't it?

On Graphene OS, on pixel, after installing, bootloader should be locked (https://grapheneos.org/install/web#locking-the-bootloader). But anyway GPay not works. I beleave Gpay is most common dealbreaker for the switching to Grephene.

Yep, good approach. I guess if you cannot live without gpay, ya you are cooked. Also, some apps are not working on Graphene coz devs were too lazy to support it.

You mean apps dont work because devs are to scared of a free person. I've seen many apps not work because they detect a custom ROM.

    Yeah, "Google Play Integrity" bullshit...

Wise keeps asking for it, but my Graphenis blocks it and Wise works just fine without it.

Yeah, basically everything would work without it but sadly there are multiple levels and the highest one is TPM based so there's no way around. Good on Wise to "just" run a basic integrity check.

Yes, 90% of bank apps work just fine luckily and complaining helps a lot but yeah seem some horror stories. You get forced to use their app but you cant run it on graphenis, image 😭

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, and while I wholeheartedly agree Google is pure evil coming to privacy and stuff like that, to me it still feels like overreacting and fearmongering tbh. I actually prefer when developers are ID verified. I’d rather know the app isn’t made by some random anonymous dude from nowhere who can just disappear after uploading malware or scams.

Now the sideloading part, it isn’t shut down like the title makes it sound. You can still sideload unverified apps, it just goes through the advanced flow now. Like enable developer mode, do the 24-hour wait once (just once), and after that you mostly just get a warning popup before installing. It’s a bit more steps but it’s not blocked. This might even be a good thing considering how easy it is now to trick technically illiterate people into installing malware. “You got a traffic ticket, here it is, ticket.apk” and boom.

This post and keepandroidopen.org keep saying Google could change it in the future since the advanced flow is in Play Services, that is true and a real concern. Also a lot of things could happen and change in the future, not just this.

If you miss any confirmation popup, the apk feature remains disabled and you’ll have to start over the 24-hour clock.

You really have a gift to predict what the devious minds will do next. I wish you also had the power to stop them.
