Namecheap did not auto-renew domain (check your domains)

Noticed that domain went down and NS changed to parking (.eu domain). Opened instantly NameCheap panel and found out that the domain is about to expiry tomorrow. Alright, let's try to renew it automatically, nope won't work, domain has to be renewed 5 days before expiration (fucking great logic).

Had to chat with support and wait over an hour so they could fix it (they also wanted to charge a redemption fee, but then took it away once released it was their fuck up). So to sum up:

  1. Auto-renewal was enabled for this domain.
  2. There was enough credit on account.
  3. There was active debit/credit card on account.
  4. Zero emails from NameCheap (spam checked).

You guys better check out your domains and that Namecheap did not do the same shit to you.

This is first fuck up from NameCheap since they got bough, so I am thinking about to migrate all my domains to EU based domain registrar. Seems like Gandi is the best option, but I am also available to other alternatives in EU if someone can vouch. Note that register must have quite a lot of zones (not just popular one's).

They're not EU-based, but I've never had an issue with Porkbun. Also not EU based, but Infomaniak are decent and they're based in Switzerland.

I've been using Netim since 2013 for most of my ccTLDs and haven't had any issues with them, so they may be worth considering.

    https://www.netim.com/en/domain-name/extensions-list

    Another option would be INWX.

NC gone to shit lately. Silly enough, spaceship is ok. Netim is a bit pricey on some rarer tlds.

It's time to move to porkbun

  • After back and forth they did fully agree that it was their mistake. This is actually major fuck up, because I did not even receive any emails from them either. Not one problem, but two. How fucking hard can it be to auto renew domain for a company that has been in business since 2001, lmao.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your message.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.

We agree that the automatic billing should be processed either using credit or debit cards, as well as account funds.

Upon reviewing your case, we found that your domain renewal was unfortunately missed due to an internal bug in our system.

We've already logged the incident and escalated it to the appropriate team for investigation. At this time, we don't have an estimated timeframe for when the issue will be fully resolved, but our team is actively working to identify the root cause and implement measures to help prevent similar situations in the future.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience and understanding while this is being addressed.

Thank you for your continued trust in Namecheap.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

What difference does the jurisdiction make?

  • @JohnFilch123 said: What difference does the jurisdiction make?

For example I don't want USA based company to get my money. Crazy right?

A bit. USA will still get part of it but probably less. Otherwise, it is good to have principles but you have to pay a premium for this, which I generally don't like.

I've had a similar issue with a .online domain several years ago.

And they've had a ".online special" back then, so the renewal should have been cheaper (that's why I moved the domain there).

The outcome was similar, but I was charged a full price at the end (no special).

Also the support wasn't particularly welcoming and with a poor english skills.

idk man, what premium? every registrar will rise the price sooner or later? In worse case scenario I will pay 10% more than now, not end of the world.

also Namecheap has shit billing system for companies, you have to actually contact them first so they can issue you a proper invoice, instead of making on right after the payment.

Premium = prices are generally more expensive because it is non-US, freedom of speech etc. I tried Gandi and their prices were higher, had to migrate.

Ah ok gotcha. I am curious generally why people prefer certain jurisdiction over another one.

This is another reason I prefer to renew my domain at least 1 year before it’s expiry date.

For EU I don’t have any recommendation, but to avoid these issue’s maybe setup some kind of monitoring, if you’re not into the programming, AI is your best friends

Peace of mind is generally nice. I used Internet.bs until the LegalScript drama made Paypal drop them. Why? (Back then) great prices + being (technically) out of reach of all major complain sources is good, isn't it (i mean in the end it actually took cutting their ability to collect payments to get them to move at all - pretty great while it lasted).

  • Or just use @Hosteroid app to monitor domains.

Gotcha gotcha. I have a few domains with them. However, I think there is no bulletproof registrar these days. It depends the gravity of your action and who is hunting you down I guess.

Yeah, there's not much special about them anymore these days. From what i hear people are quite happy with them though, so if not paying an US company is the major goal they might be an option. CentralNic is from the UK after all if i remember correctly.

Namecheap obviously screwed up here by failing to do the early renewal, but I’d just keep in mind that no matter the registrar, there are quite a few TLDs that are absolute nightmares. Many registrars issue warnings about renewing those extensions. Here’s Namecheap’s:

    https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/248/36/how-do-i-renew-cx-de-eu-and-nl-domains/

If you use any of these TLDs or others that are similar, I suggest not relying on any registrar and taking it into your own hands to renew manually ahead of time. Of course, if it’s a .de, you can only renew within 30 days of expiration, so that's another annoyance to keep in mind.

What is especially surprising is how several of the worst TLDs are also based in the EU. You’d think with all the consumer protections, they’d be a lot more consumer friendly, but instead, they’re the exact opposite.

Yeah I'm not sure either, especially for TLDs like .com where the US has jurisdiction anyways, since the registry is US-based.

yeah. it happened to me when I had domains with namesilo, namecheap and godaddy. Even auto-renew was ON, the domain got expired and couldn't renew and my card details were already saved. So I avoid registering names with these domain registrars. More better options in EU and US. Openprovider is okayish. Avoid hostinger or ionos. they are the worst.
