Imagine if a provider said they offered a free VPS with 1 core and 1 GB of RAM, but charged a $20 account management fee per year.
What people dislike is the wordplay, not the one dollar.
What a naive vovler… Today is 1$, tomorrow it is 2$, the day after tomorrow it is 0$, but free service is now 19.99$/month with minimum 12 months contract. Capish?
This article was from their own site, likely aimed at users of Bunny already.. in that case, it would be "free" and would save existing users money.
No, they knew it sound spread based on the title. Otherwise it would have been an announcement in logged in view or an email to existing clients, not a public blog post.
Not only did it end up on LET; it was top of Hacker News.

HieuPC is angri at you

Unsure on the backlash here though - the title is fine, it's "We’re making Bunny DNS free" not "We’re making Bunny free". They even mention the minimum charge within the post itself, it's not like anything is misleading or hidden.
People like to overreact on everything. Hardly anyone is even commenting on that point on HN..
i have been using them for around 1 year
I only found out after receiving the deduction that they claimed DNS was free.
So 1 USD for 500 domains is free?
Is 5 USD for 10 domains free?
Is 100 USD for 1 domain free?
At what point exactly does free mean free in your view?
it's 1$ minimum spend, you can spend that 1$ in any of their other services and the DNS becomes absolutely free, don't you think?
The product Bunny DNS is free
The Bunny account costs $12/year
Other Bunny products have their own prices
All of these can be true at the same time.
Seems pretty simple and clear, no?
Edit: Ok I misread.
I'm using Bunny Storage, Stream etc. I pay $1 minimum to use my Bunny account. I now add Bunny DNS, I pay 0 extra. It's a free addition to an account which has a standing account charge on it.
These are completely irrelevant. It even shows it, right at the top of their general pricing page - https://bunny.net/pricing/
guys dont fall for this marketing bs, cloudflare is actually free!
You didn’t answer my question. I’ll reply back if you let me know at what price for how many domains the charge stops being free.
They introduced the $1 min monthly spend in July 22, 2019. Its been almost 7 years. As I said, I see it as an anti abuse/clearing up unused zones measure rather than profit making.
It's free for existing users of Bunny services. It's really not difficult to understand.
Ou, it is time to revise the fee then.
This wasn’t my question but thanks for clearifying something that I didn’t ask.
Did they drop the minimum balance exception for grandfathered accounts? I remember being on a truly free account in the past. Now my account is suspended due to credit balance. https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/175036/bunny-net-removes-the-top-up-criteria-and-account-credit-is-for-lifetime-now/p1
Hello I'm offering free 1c2g VPS
1 VPS per account, an account costs 100/month
Not very relevant example but ok.
ok so 1 per account then its not free but 500 per account it is free
2 vps per account now
is it free then?
I understand you have got a lot of free time coding with AI but the point is very simple. DNS usage is free, account is $1/m.
at exactly how many domains per account is it free if my example wasn't to your liking?
Maybe misleading blog post or shitty sales, but I'm happy to get unlimited geodns and weighted DNS, health check DNS, scripted DNS and custom nameservers for the price of $12 per year ?
You don't get that on CF.
Or $2 if you have 6 domains.
And you can use that $12 on other products, say if the health checks see your site down to serve a static maintenance page that is hosted on bunny?
I don't understand the need to argue semantics in this case. The min spend fee is something that was introduced 7 years ago. This change has nothing directly to do with it. This change is good and reduces costs if you already were using them, a rare change for 2026.
You are correct semantically. Product is not fully free if having an account open is not free, however it's still a good change.
you guys are cracking me up, lol.
dnscale.eu is quite nice and free as well
