And they said they are FREE, my butt
Still incredibly cheap for GeoDNS compared to alternatives like ClouDNS. Not really sure about normal DNS though, small websites wouldn't likely to exceed the previous free quota while big ones with huge traffic are already paying a lot for CDN that one or two dollars less wouldn't really matter for them (or they use cloudflare, which is free).
Yep, ClouDNS cheapest package is like $35/y.
@budi1413 so you have actually registered to check whether they will charge or not?
Guys, has anyone tried to do the same?
I wouldn't mind having an extra slave DNS (don't need Geo), but not for $12/yr.
Cloudflare is free until they decide they have replaced sufficient part of the internet with themselves and it's time to recover the expenditure (which is extensive).
And that package is not even GeoDNS, the one that does cost $10/m, almost cover the entire year with Bunny. Also the fact that you can control your DNS with code on Bunny is already insane.
Correct. I like ClouDNS but they are becoming very expensive. Also, their sale price is non-recurring, which is big meh.
Thanks for your guessing. I will get back to you once I want more guesses.
Don't know about them, but 20% of internet traffic is already more than sufficient for me. The moment they turn hostile, people would just move to somewhere else. What they want from free customers is their traffic data, so they could catch up with cyber security trends and squeeze more out of their enterprise customers.
can we get a few more explanations about how it's ok they said free when they meant this other thing that isn't actually free because not cloudflare or whatever the fuck?
You can actually email them & ask for a deals of Premium Plan based on your actual needs, I have a custom plan with them but now i am using blueballdns self-hosted, GeoDNS from BEANSUMMERHOST NEXTGEN SHED HOSTING SOLUTION LLC.
On Bunny case, are you currently using bro, I might need some insight.
Nah, wanna migrate from them. I am testing self-hosted PowerDNS and Poweradmin and LUA for auto failover.
Nope, not yet. Will probably migrate to it once my ClouDNS expires (around September I think).
What is it?
I doubt there will be any "somewhere else" by that time.
They are looking to become for the internet what youtube became for video.
Do you happen to know any real youtube alternatives these days?
A couple of months ago there was a similar thread on this when CF introduced one more "free" service (don't recall which one exactly).
Might be out of stock by that time.
I'd suggest to pre-order. Yearly rate is discounted.
Similar to what you are doing with PowerDNS my man.
But a different one, which is..?
hate when people open my website and my bill 5x
Nice. Throw in some buyvm slices for anycast and you're golden.
Running your own is more expensive though, but also way more fun and you have more control.
I am mostly running them because (surprise!) I love self-hosting and I learn something from it. However, eventually, if I will be able to build truly fault tolerant system, I would love to fully migrate to self-hosted. You also get access to exotic DNS records like DANE.
Exactly... If you think it's fun, take a look at https://www.dnsdist.org
You can put it in front of your pdns.
I just started reselling DDoS-Protected ClouDNS for $15/domain/year
Oh I run it but for secure DNS - DOH I think.
GCore provides GeoDNS in free plan too !!
Well, I used to host a custom privacy focused Twitter alternative front-end called Nitter, stopped ever since daddy Elon imposed restrictions on guest users and scrapers like me.
Since the software is stateless, it's easy to deploy on multiple servers with Ansible, put all IPs in a JSON file on a S3 bucket with each country corresponding to that set of servers, write the logic and done. I also have another file listing every country and ASN that I wanted to block for excessive scraping, vulnerabilities scanning and DDoSing, which would redirect the traffic to a static site also on Bunny stating that they had been blocked and contact info.
What was your domain name? I probably have used it
What do you mean by these days? When was there ever a real YT alternative? Sure, there might have been a time when alternatives had two handful of users instead of the one handful they have now (not entirely true - Rumble probably has more activity currently than historic alternatives ever had) but there wasn't anything that could have actually replaced YT.
Using a YT alternative always meant and still means skipping on a bunch of content/traffic/revenue. Nothing much has changed in that regard and it's unlikely to change in the future since the masses go where the masses are. Bemoaning the lack of options is the easy part but actually doing something about it takes determination 99,999% of people don't have.
The only thing that at least theoretically could do something about YT's monopoly is an invidious style interface that unifies the various platforms thereby taking away the drawback of lacking content while still driving views towards the smaller platforms. The big problem would be that these kinds of interfaces don't/can't really proxy ads therefore not really profiting the creators on smaller platforms. This would have to be changed to break the cycle, which again is unlikely and technically probably borderline impossible anyways.
I use their DNS. But starting two months ago, they began charging $1 a month while calling it "free"
OnlyFans.
Hehehe, that made me chuckle.
I like this change. Will give it a try for sure.
Not sure about people complaining as if $1/m is the end of the world, especially when it's most likely used to remove inactive accounts and to deactivate their zones to keep things snappy, prevent multiple accounts/abuse which is known to happen when you offer free services.
$1 after payment processor fees won't make them millionaires and won't make you poor. And the amount of service they are offering is more than worth it.
Don't think you've ever used it, as I didn't list my instance on the repo, so all the traffic was coming from search engines only.
And actually, I didn't stop because of daddy Elon, it was even more embarrassing than that.
Basically, I used my personal domain ending in .vn and forgot to disable NSFW content, which the VNNIC didn't like. They seized my domain and contacted the local authorities, which called me for a talk. Scariest experience of my life.
this is not highendtalk. even in hightend route53 you can get a 1 zone for and 1 million queries for $0.90
