How do I install Debian on a Hyonix VPS that has Secure Boot enabled?
Hi everyone,
I've been using Hyonix for several years and recently asked their support whether they could disable Secure Boot or reinstall my VPS with Debian.
Their response was:
We will not be able to turn off Secure Boot as our service is optimized for Windows-based OS only (and enforced).
We do not allow reinstallation of OS other than Windows at this time. This has been made clear on our site and order form.
So it looks like Secure Boot is enforced and they only officially support Windows.
I'm wondering if anyone has successfully installed Debian (or another Linux distribution) on a Hyonix VPS under these conditions. Are there any workarounds, such as:
Booting a signed Debian installer that works with Secure Boot?
Using a custom EFI bootloader?
Running Debian inside another virtualization layer?
Any other tricks that might work without provider assistance?
I'd appreciate any suggestions or experiences from people who have tried this before.
Thanks!

Proxmox should work
This is so weird policy. I understand why someone would ban Windows from being installed, but vice versa?

pity.
The host clearly stated that they do only Windoze, why headaches over this, in the end you will violating their TOS anyway. 😳
It is indeed a bit strange.
I understand, and I'm not against using Windows. It's just that I'm much more comfortable with Linux since it's what I've been using for years.
I was hoping to run Linux mainly because I'd like to get the most out of the 9950X and keep my usual workflow. If that's not possible and the host only supports Windows, then it is what it is — I'll just have to adapt and make do with Windows instead.
Thanks for pointing it out.
They are a Windows only provider and don't provide any Linux vps services. I would look at getting one from another provider.
They may be offering Linux soon.

Could you just use WSL? Was this some smoking deal? There are plenty of providers selling 9950x VPS.
Have you tried change provider? 😂😭
Thanks for the suggestion!
You're right that there are plenty of providers offering 9950X VPS nowadays, and WSL would work for many use cases as well.
That said, the main reason I picked this one is the price — it's only $24/year. For that amount, getting access to a 9950X-based VPS is kind of hard to ignore. The performance-per-dollar is honestly excellent, and that's what made it attractive to me.
Maybe it's not the absolute best option for everyone, but at $24/year, I think the value is pretty impressive. 🙂
Hi,
for 24 USD/year for a windows system ( even its windows 11 ) is actually a no brainer... keep it.
Didnt virtualbox had in the past a paravirtualization mode where you do not need access to the hardware cpu capabilities?
Should still work, main point was that proxmox is secure boot signed by Microsoft. But it should also run under hyper v fine
Debian 13 supports UEFI Secure Boot, so what's the issue? Did you try before you posted?
During the installation it automatically deploys shim-signed and grub-efi-amd64-signed, which use a bootloader officially signed by Microsoft. Netinst iso should work.
wait is this post ai
It caused some issues; there are probably still restrictions in place.
Yes I was worried about grammatical errors, so I used ChatGPT.
Not supported if all the techs are only Windows literate.
What were you doing with the existing Windows you've been running there for years?
Is this not possible with one if the many reinstallers?
yes
Currently, I am only running Nginx.
Technically, I think you can install Debian or any other OS via netboot.xyz.efi.
https://netboot.xyz/docs/quick-start/
Use windows to make a small partition copy the files in that you need and destroy the windows boot loader then reboot you should drop to the efi shell.
Kick off the install via the uefi shell assuming (check) it's available via the VNC console.
But really... Use another host
I was more referring to projects like this: https://github.com/minlearn/inst
Or
https://github.com/Georgebobby/DD-Scripts
Maybe they are completely ignorant about Linux and don't want support requests that their staff can't handle? Or maybe they just like enforcing rules for the sake of it (which is honestly a real possibility).
I assume it is a mix
Data deduplication? Does Storage Spaces do that?
every VM that is Windows-licenced is wasting money on the fee - here, fixed it for you
If they are using Hyper-V, then the default settings are to only allow Microsoft signed OSes to boot. It's likely simply not worth it for them to adjust their tooling to configure a non-secure boot VM especially as that will likely increase their support workload etc.
I know of a number of organisations and MSPs that are, like mentioned above, not proficient enough with Linux systems to be willing to maintain them or field queries about them. I work with a business that requires Windows usage around the estate due to a requirement for a support agreement, an equivalent from Canonical or Red Hat would exceed Windows Server.
As mentioned above too though, a licensed Windows VM for $24/year is a steal. The license fees would swallow that instantly.
There is no available method to install Linux. Many years ago, Hyonix officially allowed Linux installation with their assistance, but possibly because of Misaka, Hyonix no longer supports Linux.
Misaka uses Hyonix’s GSL resources in many regions. Misaka’s pricing is very high, and in some regions they seem to deliberately keep stock unavailable, making it impossible for users to buy good routes at a reasonable price.
Hyonix’s Linux service is not sold to individual customers. In the long run, I believe Hyonix is not a sustainable choice, even if they have made a lot of money.
