How do I install Debian on a Hyonix VPS that has Secure Boot enabled?
Hi everyone,
I've been using Hyonix for several years and recently asked their support whether they could disable Secure Boot or reinstall my VPS with Debian.
Their response was:
We will not be able to turn off Secure Boot as our service is optimized for Windows-based OS only (and enforced).
We do not allow reinstallation of OS other than Windows at this time. This has been made clear on our site and order form.
So it looks like Secure Boot is enforced and they only officially support Windows.
I'm wondering if anyone has successfully installed Debian (or another Linux distribution) on a Hyonix VPS under these conditions. Are there any workarounds, such as:
Booting a signed Debian installer that works with Secure Boot?
Using a custom EFI bootloader?
Running Debian inside another virtualization layer?
Any other tricks that might work without provider assistance?
I'd appreciate any suggestions or experiences from people who have tried this before.

This is so weird policy. I understand why someone would ban Windows from being installed, but vice versa?

The host clearly stated that they do only Windoze, why headaches over this, in the end you will violating their TOS anyway. 😳
It is indeed a bit strange.
I understand, and I'm not against using Windows. It's just that I'm much more comfortable with Linux since it's what I've been using for years.
I was hoping to run Linux mainly because I'd like to get the most out of the 9950X and keep my usual workflow. If that's not possible and the host only supports Windows, then it is what it is — I'll just have to adapt and make do with Windows instead.

They are a Windows only provider and don't provide any Linux vps services. I would look at getting one from another provider.

Could you just use WSL? Was this some smoking deal? There are plenty of providers selling 9950x VPS.

You're right that there are plenty of providers offering 9950X VPS nowadays, and WSL would work for many use cases as well.
That said, the main reason I picked this one is the price — it's only $24/year. For that amount, getting access to a 9950X-based VPS is kind of hard to ignore. The performance-per-dollar is honestly excellent, and that's what made it attractive to me.
Maybe it's not the absolute best option for everyone, but at $24/year, I think the value is pretty impressive. 🙂

for 24 USD/year for a windows system ( even its windows 11 ) is actually a no brainer... keep it.
Didnt virtualbox had in the past a paravirtualization mode where you do not need access to the hardware cpu capabilities?
Should still work, main point was that proxmox is secure boot signed by Microsoft. But it should also run under hyper v fine
Debian 13 supports UEFI Secure Boot, so what's the issue? Did you try before you posted?
During the installation it automatically deploys shim-signed and grub-efi-amd64-signed, which use a bootloader officially signed by Microsoft. Netinst iso should work.
