it's also common for dodgy (mostly russian) providers to put some fake data like Panama/Seychelles, but afaik this is done for dmca/abuse purposes and not for misleading the customers for being somewhere it's not. This wasn't the case with the.hosting, many less-known VPN services will have to close locations now.

I wouldn't be so sure about the Seychelles companies being fake. Seychelles is a pretty popular location due the companies (like to a lesser degree these days Panama) being very hard to trace to an actual owner (without a local court order it's probably impossible to find out who runs them due to there being no public database and all positions very likely being filled by various lawyers or other strawmen on top of that) and they are regularly sold by offshore incorporation services.

Given you actually make some money its not even that expensive to get one. You also just pay a flat fee to the state and zero taxes on overseas (read: all) income, so there's no need to disclose anything about the actual business activities.

Legal entity might be real, but when you see Seychelles as geolocation in whois, it's 100% fake. This is what I'm talking about. And this is not what the locations of the.hosting were.

Ah, yeah that's 100% a given. I don't think the Seychelles have much infrastructure at all. The IP owner being incorporated there isn't all that far fetched though.

Hmm, have couple of servers in Greece, North Macedonia and other locations with 4vps in which i can see that they use the hosting do i need to worry about? No info from 4vps about shutdown etc...

@titus said: But I never liked them.. :/ Shady rebranding previously, Shady promotions (cheap vps renewable only for 6 months, Offered promo plans what never was on stock/orderable, etc), Complete IP ranges on firewall for recurring abuses.

You can add intentionally delivering 0.15Gbps when advertising 1Gbps shared.

At least for Greece, as it appears, they probably leased hardware from Lancom in Thessaloniki (or some third party with servers there). Same for 4VPS, who don't seem to be affected by all this by the way...

in 4vps telegram chat people are talking about locations "falling" so i would say it is affected

It will probably be hard for them to stop something they do not have. In all seriousness: Why did you buy there? I mean it was pretty obvious that this wasn't the most kosher operation (even if in the end it really was money flows that broke their back). If that's exactly the reason you bought there, well... you should have known that raids and sudden disappearances are part of the game.

I have been their customer for almost two years and was satisfied with their service so I renewed my server again and bought two new servers

That's not a reason to choose them in general - like when you were researching hosting options. Stuff like cheap, lenient and so on. I mean, if you say you didn't notice the red flags and just went by price there's nothing i can do but believe you anyways. If you actually noticed but thought it was fine just because they managed to stay afloat for a year, well, that doesn't really mean a whole lot in such a context.

    From 4vps Telegram today:

    Russian->English via Yandex translate:

    Dear customers!

Due to the termination of our upstream provider's operations in a number of European locations, we are forced to migrate your VPS to temporary sites.:

The work will affect the following countries: 🇧🇪 Belgium, 🇬🇷 Greece, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇲🇰 North Macedonia, Croatia🇭🇷. - VPS from these countries will be temporarily migrated to another location.

During the period from today to Friday inclusive, there may be temporary failures in the operation of the VPS in these locations, as well as short-term unavailability of servers due to the migration process.

Right now, please create backups of all important data on your VPS. Also, keep copies in a safe place (another server, local disk, cloud storage).

We make every effort to minimize downtime and keep your data completely safe. All work will be carried out with the utmost care.

Thank you for your understanding and trust.

    With respect,
    The team 4vps.su

    Original:

    Команда 4vps.su

Is this related to @antonpa's JustHost shutting down a number of uncommon locations?

    Hello,

Please be informed that the following locations are being closed for new service provisioning due to their planned decommissioning: BRU1 (Brussels, Belgium), CPH1 (Copenhagen, Denmark), EVN1 (Yerevan, Armenia), GVA1 (Geneva, Switzerland), ICN1 (Seoul, South Korea), KIV1 (Chisinau, Moldova), LJU1 (Ljubljana, Slovenia), OTP1 (Bucharest, Romania), PRG1 (Prague, Czech Republic), RKV1 (Reykjavik, Iceland), SAO1 (São Paulo, Brazil), SKG1 (Thessaloniki, Greece), TLV1 (Tel Aviv, Israel), TYO1 (Tokyo, Japan).

New orders will no longer be provisioned in these locations. Existing services in these locations will later be migrated to the nearest available JustHost locations.

If you would like to move your service in advance, you can migrate it yourself to the nearest available location through your client area. If needed, our support team can help you check the available options.

We will provide additional information about the migration of existing services separately.
    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best regards,

  • Will they even issue a refund, or did several thousand euros just burned from my balance?

I mean, they are shutting down, thousand of servers seized and you still expect refunds...

Have you ever considered keeping your money at an actual bank? I know it's weird but i heard it works for some people .

  • Looks like the.hosting shutdown made room for others, at least in Thessaloniki... Just got an email from a similar provider (similar as in "offering VPS in dozens of locations worldwide") based in Cyprus, that they will be migrating their Athens hardware to Thessaloniki THIS weekend! the.hosting is shutting down everything on Friday for the record.

    "Well isn't that convenient!"

In any case, whoever built & operates such a geographically distributed infra has my "thumbs up"...
