Welcome to FOSSVPS and Goodbye to NodeSeek
msatt
Member, Host Rep

Hi - It has been a while since our last update and there have been some changes due to abuse issues from NodeSeek clients.
- 29th of May VPS's belonging to NodeSeek clients will be terminated with no records kept. Emails have been sent and forum posts made.
- Nodeseek is no longer an accepted forum for potential new clients.
- Clients with good non spammy reputations are only accepted from LET or LES.
- Registration via a VPN is blocked.
- Throw away email addresses are blocked.
- Registering from Russia, China or North Korea is blocked.
- Abuse of any type (service, verbal etc) will result in VPS termination.
There is a common misconception that there has to be a catch when signing up for a free VPS. Well as far as I am concerned there is not. We ask for your Name, email address and GIT / Web url. This information is only used for direct service type communication and verification. All we ask in return is that you thank and support us and our donors.
FOSSVPS will NEVER pass your data to any other organisation other than any legal requirement.
I thought I would share some of the communication I have had with a client (keeping it anonymous).
FOSSVPS April 1st
Hi I want to make you aware that your VMID XXX on XXX has continuous dual CPU usage of 35%+ for over 5 days.
Please understand this free service is for Open Source development and while usage can burst, sustained is not reasonable.
What you are doing can affect others, so your usage has been forcibly reduced to 10% in the hypervisor.
Please rectify your usage and inform me of your actions and I can then release the CPU restraints allowing for normal VM speeds.

Ok
FOSSVPS May 21
That was sent on April 1st !!!! Also no apology. That is unreasonable behaviour. You abused FOSSVPS.
Client May 21
I'm AFK,m cause have a job on RL,m that's why i apologize. What should i do?
I decided that this LET user is not capable of using a VPS or developing Open Source Software. So bye bye.
Being 'strict' with a free resource is necessary - it is not in my nature to do this but I must protect FOSSVPS and our generous donors - ( @Alexhost, @Hosteroid, @st-hosting and Jetnode ).
Because of the NodeSeek termination we have plenty of resources available for new honest clients.
For those new to the forum, FOSSVPS provide a free 2vcpu, 4GB RAM, 64GB disk with ipv6 and NAT ipv4.
To qualify you must
- Be an Open Source developer (Using Open Source does not qualify),
- Be an active member of LET or LES and have
- Quality (not spammy) posts
- Thanks for your posts
- Been a member for at least 3 months
Come along and join us - genuine developers are really welcome.
Best wishes
Mike

Good luck. Godspeed
不可接受!
more like racist
IP racism? Just go to hk, tw, mo, etc
I am only targeting where the abuse has come from.
If I could magically know who was an abuser, I would not have to create these blocks.
Communities need to 'police' themselves and I am working on a referral system where a respected member can vouch for a Nodeseek member. In those cases there would be no block (assuming they are an Open Source developer).
Mike
So, abusing free server is fine but booting abusers out is racism
oh those emotional MJJs
why?it doesnt matter.
That was something from several years ago. It’s great that you offer free services, but when I applied, there was no response at all. I would prefer to pay for the service so that I can have better reliability and assurance.
@vpsre - Several years ago we did not exist (or perhaps I am confused what you are saying).
By all means pay for a reliable service although that is rather insulting to insinuate we are not.
Send me a PM with details when you requested registration and I will happily look into what happened.
edit
Just checked all registrations and there has been nothing received for user vpsre so I am unsure what has happened.
Abuse is inevitable, so I feel it’s safer to restrict it through automated programs. SolusVM/VirtFusion might not offer dynamic load limiting. If you don't have a good solution yet, you could look into idcsmart from China. It provides intelligent load management, including CPU, I/O, and bandwidth. Beyond just a private cloud platform, they also offer financial solutions and DCIM IDC automation solutions. There are many excellent developers in China, and you can verify their authenticity through their GitHub link.
I'll simply block traffic from China.
Is freevps.org affiliated with your company? I applied there several years ago. I have my own independent blog, but after applying, I never received any response or updates.
NO - that is a completely different organisation.
You may refute my claim, but I haven't seen in this forum — user from hk, tw, mo behaving like troublesome user from cn.
while I understand the reason for blanket block I too feel sorry for the good people from the blocked places... paying for the abusive ohers is not nice, but they can search for other options albeit getting harder and harder as admins keep getting hammered by abusers.
This is why we can't get nice things. More manual verification has a cost. I cannot even see tierhive main weebsite because of such bans, but can't complain, he must have good reason too.
I support you in doing that. Free services can indeed be abused by some users with bad intentions.
@zhujizixun - Thank you for the suggestions. I have absolutely no objections accepting Chinese Open Source developers or developers from any of the excluded countries. I developed code which monitors usage and if a level is exceeded over a 24 hour period the VPS is limited to 10% CPU. However this is still abuse.
@radex - No I won't block China traffic because of the above
Hopefully the (in development) referral system will help with proper registrations.
20 days is lenient AF already. It's a free service, there has to be some requirements.
Nope, separate services.
https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/181789/free-nat-kvms-courtesy-of-gthost-crunchbits-scaleblade-and-piehasbeeneaten-freevps-org/p1 it's all there :P
Absolutely 100% agree.
Any respected member of LET or LES can refer someone from a blocked country.
All I need is a PM with -
If the project is true Open Source (white hat) I can do a manual 'push' and build the server.
So let me get this straight:A LET user abuses the server = terminate the individual user.
A NodeSeek user abuses the server = terminate the entire forum, wipe all data, and drop a blanket ban on three countries.
The hypocrisy here is loud. If you actually cared about stopping abuse, you'd target the abusers at the account level. Using collective punishment just proves you're applying rules based on where people come from, not what they actually do.
@Yadmin - No you have not got it straight so please dont make such accusations.
A LET user did over use CPU, was warned and took over a month to respond without any apology.
NS user abused and got the entire server shutdown and IPs tarnished. The provider Alexhost issued a strong (understandable) warning that they would not tolerate abuse and that any reoccurence would not be tolerated.
I would say it is likely that 90%+ NS users are not Open Source developers and about 40%+ are abusing resources.
So call me hypocritical if you wish but get facts correct first instead of making wild accusations.
Free resources are targets for abuse so we have to have strong policies - I am very happy to hear any suggestions you may have for targeting abusers.
Claude think this fits the best.

I can't blame you, since you're providing the server for free.
All I can say is respect. charitable activities should be used in a regulated manner.
I am a staunch paying user.
I believe that charitable activities are unsustainable unless they are run by a large company. (because of the huge spillover profits,And their motivation comes from attracting users, like Oracle.)
@n31 - thank you for the respect
As far as sustainability, you must understand that the nodes are provided by our great sponsors - @Alexhost, @Hosteroid, @st-hostings and me.
So we do have backers and the principle is I and I hope our clients want to promote them. The nodes are reliable and I genuinely give my time for no monetary benefits although I can have a free server if I wish. So yes I believe we should be seen as a charity.
but did you know that the LET user that abused the server is secretly an undercover mjj from nodeseek?
What if the user has an account on both LET and NS, and their account on LET is in good standing? What if they have an account on LET and later make an account on NS?
Why Russia? They aren't on NS and don't speak Chinese.
Why not just suspend the VPS or heavily throttle the CPU to e.g. 1% if it's not abuse?
If they have a good standing on LET / LES that is fine. I am just stopping direct registration from an NS only user.
Chinese is irrelevant - hacking is.
I do throttle the CPU and wait for a resolution response. But waiting over a month and then getting 'gibberish' is just wasting time.
I worry that the heavy-handed response will cause angry NS users to create accounts with the sole purpose of causing abuse complaints.
