How to start get own ASN and IPv6?
Hello all,
Recently fell into the ASN/BGP/IPv6 rabbit hole.
My goal is pretty simple:
- get my own ASN
- get some IPv6 space
- connect it to my VPSes
- maybe through some kind of tunnel setup like HE tunnel
Mostly just for learning and personal lab stuff, not trying to become an ISP, hehehe
I actually tried applying for a RIPE LIR earlier today… then realized it’s a lot more serious than I expected lol.
So now I’m looking for the more beginner-friendly route.
How do most people usually start with this?
Any recommended providers/services that are good for learning and not too expensive?

To become a LIR, you need to pay an annual membership fee to RIPE (about 2,000 Euro). I doubt that you are ready for this. However, you can get an ASN and IPv6 for a lower cost by placing an order with any existing LIR. In this case, your expenses will be around 100-200 Euro per year.

What about the sponsored ASN / delegated ipv6 route instead?
Would that be possible for a beginner setup? Mainly just looking to learn and maybe route it to a few vps through tunnels or basic BGP.
Any providers can recommend for that kind of setup?

Sponsored ASN + delegated IPv6 is probably the easiest way to start.
A lot of people do that instead of becoming a RIPE LIR, since it’s much cheaper and way less hassle.
For a basic lab setup you’d usually get:
That’s enough to start playing with FRR/Bird and announce your own prefix.
Tunneling it is pretty common, especially if your VPS provider doesn’t offer native BGP.
You can check providers like iFog, Route64, Openfactory or even @aluy (they include a /44 if you buy an ASN, which is pretty nice).
Probably the simplest path:
get sponsored ASN + IPv6, rent 1-2 VPS, set up a tunnel, start experimenting with BGP

Quick update.
Ended up trying an IPv6 assignment first from @aluy instead of going full RIPE LIR / ASN route.
Now I’m trying to figure out the next step: finding a VPS provider that supports BYOIPv6 without requiring my own ASN.
Aluy mentioned some providers can announce the prefix under their ASN, which sounds perfect for my use case.
Anyone here in LET doing this already? Any provider recommendations that are BYOIPv6 friendly and free?

Did you expect this to be free? IPv6 might be dirt cheap comparatively but free is still a bit low-ballish...
There are providers that can announce it for free like skhron @tentor
@onidel @oloke can do it but it is a $10 one time fee.
Thanks for mention! Yes, we do both BYOIP (own addresses originated by our ASN) and BGP sessions for free.
I am looking for cheap way of doing Anycast. Is BYOIP possible without an ASN? VPS providers?
We can do that also in Gdańsk or in Singapore. NJ will be possible soon also.
We will be providing that in our POPs soon, 1 IPv4 + /64 anycasted IPv6.
Will probably consider anycasted BYOIP also.
If you want to do anycast across multiple providers without ASN, then that will not work.
Honestly dn42 is probably the best starting point before spending money on a real ASN/LIR setup.
You can break things safely, learn BGP basics, play with FRR/Bird and understand routing without the RIPE paperwork stress.
Quick update again.
I ended up trying my own IPv6 space first from @aluy instead of going straight into the full RIPE LIR + own ASN route.
After figuring out RIPE objects, route6, RPKI/ROA, LoA, and getting confused for a while. SiteHub @HostDoc helped get the prefix announced globally under their ASN.
Now the VPS has 16 routed /48s from the /44 allocation.
Yeay.
Did not expect this to actually work tbh.
