Mailcow, the best thing I have ever used.
I have to agree here. I was among the first to run qmail on Solaris commercially in the 90's and have been working with email ever since in one form or another so I do have some experience, and I would say that there is no valid reason to selfhost email today. If you want to do it to play and learn, fine, by all means, but it will never be reliable and should not be used for anything important. It's sad and I hate it, but that is the reality we have to deal with today due to the abuse of email.
My issue with Tutanota is that they don't have an intermediary plan between "Revolutionary" (20 GB storage, 3 domains, 3 EUR/mo) and "Legend" (500 GB storage, 10 domains, 8 EUR/mo). If they had something like 100 GB storage with 5 domains for 5 EUR/mo that would fit my needs better but alas.
I don't know I am seeing right now some birthday deal or something and seeing the 8 euro plan at 3 euro personally.
It's only for the first year, not recurring.
Ah gotcha, a little sneaky from tuta but yea. I wish more people come up in the market with cheaper alternatives for more healthy competition.
I have to agree, I currently have 2 accounts with them on legacy plans, still cheaper by 12 euros to keep them instead of buying Revolutionary Plan. Ahhh and to import emails i would have to get Legend one...
If I remember correctly, it was possible to purchase additional domains before the changes.
Edit: And I don't like the fact they don't have something like Proton Bridge to use emails on other email clients. I read that API is so hard to understand that no one even tried on creating unofficial copy.
Intelligence services there have very wide powers and technical ability to intercept all internet traffic, and have had them for a very long time.
The Netherlands is more of the same. Mass state level surveillance is the norm in the developed world.
Okay, so what about developing countries?
They are connected to developed countries via international cables which are also very surveilled.
No difference, there's global agenda, borderless lobbying, etc
Lol okay, so I am just gonna go into my wooden hut in wilderness again and have only a printer connected and have a gun surrounding it so that if it starts making random noise, I shoot it.
There is no "best thing ever" but there are always compromises but still I mean, Nyr, you have basically blacklisted all countries from your list
What mail provider are you using yourself mate?
Where is the person who had an antarctica vps and was named sunny, This is their moment to shine and tell the world about deep underwater email provider. /jk
Tbh I guess we need better protocols than E-mail. Email as a protocol is also really not privacy friendly for the most part sigh.
Google.
South park writers need to see this xD, this was fun discussion tbh.
Uh? I care about reliability and UX, not surveillance.
For private communications what matters is the tool (end to end encryption) not the jurisdiction of a server.
I agree, E-mail as a protocol is fundamentally unencrypted/requires too much trust. I hope as society we move towards better protocol but Email is currently the most ubiquitous protocol and there are still some Emails that are really privacy/surveillance sensitive (Not just from national surveillance companies but for companies like google, they might as well sell some data to these ad brokers)
So I think that its still worth having a discussion over again rather than just saying that everything surveils. Atleast that's my opinion but long term we should try to migrate over Email
better not.
didn't they have a similar scandal to the one currently unfolding at MXRoute?
...was damn solid. used one. 340.000km!
... expensive
... and becomes more and more shitty within the last 5 years.
How so? Interested because I have not used it recently.
I agree it is not cheap, but comparable alternatives are not cheaper either.
used fm for 20years.
i ended up canceling my subscription at the end of 2024 because it kept getting more expensive and, in my opinion, was becoming more about design and less about the technical aspects.
What are you using now?
not cheap either but maybe worth a look: https://www.migadu.com/

does hostbrr have their own ip's or do they use hetzner's ip?
OVH has cheap email, €0.30 ex. VAT/month/account
Never used myself but I put a friend on there, he didn't complain thus far
https://www.ovhcloud.com/en-ie/emails/
@labze
but i guess hetzner ips.
did a update in my post above
@whynotlearn
Zimbra... that's a name I haven't heard in some years.
Thas either for eu citizen only, or for eu ovh account only. Ovh panel/account situation are a huge mess, always has been. Plus i think they don't support catchall, or at least i haven't found ways to enable catchall on my account. Not sure about their reliability, might be fine or might be not but i'd avoid ovh solely because their horrible panel.
I migrated his email and checked it out, it looked decent tbh
Yeah I doubt catchall is supported since you pay per account
edit: actually might be EU only
And yes the panel is shitty, the friend I migrated didn't get to experience this though because I just signed him up and used his card
