Disk Type: NVME Main + HDD secondary

Bandwidth: ANY
Port Speed: 5-10Gbit

DDoS Protection: ANY

  • iGPU is optional but preferable. I'd rather good networking than iGPU

What do you need the iGPU for? Hardware transcoding?

  • Yeah correct but can make do without it. I was recently running a server without it and 3 transcodes (4c/8t) server got throttled as it was on 100%. I assume higher core count would help out

What will help a lot is AVX512 and a high core clock, but what will help even more is proper encoding settings. For example, AV1 on preset 13 is going to be extremely fast (especially with tiling) and the quality won't be too bad at all.

And if this is a dedicated transcoding machine (i.e. you don't mind if it's using 90% CPU all the time), then if you can manage to fit everything in software, the quality will be better than what you can get in hardware. Software encoding will always provide superior visual quality at any given bitrate than hardware encoding.

  • Interesting, I’ll take a look around for that. Thanks @forest!

Just saw your edit, so would I benefit from a system that has a lot of higher clock? Is that only featured in servers equipped with a R7/R9? Epyc doesn’t have that support?

EPYC does have AVX512, but typically it's focused on lower base clocks but over many cores, which is very useful if you're hosting a lot of VMs or running highly parallel tasks. Ryzen processors tend to have fewer, but faster cores. With video encoding, there are rapidly diminishing returns to be had by increasing parallelism. I find the sweet spot to be around 4 threads per encode.

What codec are you transcoding to?

  • Mostly to h264/x264 or HEVC/x265 really.

  • I don’t think I was specific enough, so I’m commenting with clearer requirements.

I’m looking for a storage-focused dedicated server and would appreciate provider or deal recommendations.

    What I need:

    • Type: Dedicated server (storage oriented)
    • Location: Europe, ideally Netherlands (NL) (open to other EU if network is solid)
    • Storage: 24–32TB to start, with the ability to grow over time
    • Network: 10Gbit port required
    • CPU: Prefer higher core count
    • RAM: Enough for caching + multiple services (flexible depending on offer)
    • Bandwidth: High included transfer or unmetered preferred
    • DDoS protection: Yes
    • IP addresses: 1x IPv4 only (that’s all I need)

    Budget: Around $150 USD/month
Billing: Monthly preferred (quarterly/yearly OK if pricing is better)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    IP-KVM: iDRAC
    Upgrades available

    Starts at €239.20/month
