DeluxHost | I-5 and Z-2

Hi all,

that's my first review here on LET and I want to share my thoughts about DeluxHost.

My Plans:

I-5 --> https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/209869/deluxhost-net-new-i-series-vps-ultra-low-latency-from-7-yr-pre-order-ned
-> Yabs result at the end
35€/yr

Z-2 --> https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/204375/deluxhost-net-high-performance-pre-order-new-vps-deals-start-only-7-annual-ned
9€/yr

Review:

The reason I'm writing this review is that I believe that even with a low price, I, as a customer, still have certain expectations. I was aware from the start that I wouldn't be getting dedicated resources for the money I paid and that there might be occasional network issues or similar problems.

Importantly, I won't be canceling the servers for now, hoping that performance will improve as customers who are overusing the host systems are gradually blocked. My review is simply meant to clarify that this is an "experimental" environment, and no services—not even a DNS server—are being hosted that are intended to be accessible to anyone else on the internet.

Let's start by talking about packet loss and downtime. I've attached screenshots from my monitoring for the last 35 days:

Z-2:
https://ibb.co/0VGXP8Gv

I-5:
https://ibb.co/XcFDV1T

//EDIT: avg. packet loss is 6.29% and 7.02% in a range of 35 days.

Both servers are down with similar frequency and for similar durations. When they're not completely down, the packet loss is so high that, in my opinion, the servers are temporarily unusable (by the way, StatusCake reports the same thing from three different sources).

It's gotten to the point where I get a notification for each server that it's down at least once a day – it's really annoying.

In this case, it refers to IPv4 – IPv6 is even worse. IPv6 has been down on one server for more than 10 days. I've already opened a ticket about this, had to do some testing, and ultimately restart the server, which fixed it – but only for a day. After that, IPv6 was unreachable again.

The CPU, RAM, and hard drives are underperforming. Just look at the YABS results below. I've really lowered my expectations, but even so, this is unusable for testing purposes. What good are 3 CPU cores and 16GB of RAM if I can't use them? A hard drive is just as important as the CPU and RAM, even on a test system—it's a configuration that only makes sense if everything works together reasonably well. This is especially crucial with the Z-5 server—it's simply unusable for me in this state, even for testing.

When I purchased the server, the anti-DDoS module was visible in the customer interface. After a short time, I received an error message stating that I didn't have the necessary permissions to access it, and now the menu item isn't even there anymore. What really bothers me is the complete lack of communication and opacity.

The server is completely unusable in this regard. Currently, only one Portainer agent is running on the servers, without any workload, because the systems are simply unreliable—not just occasionally or now and then, but completely.

Support Team:

The support team is friendly and helpful, and always tries to provide assistance as quickly as possible. So far, contact with the team has always been pleasant and friendly, and they have been committed to finding a solution.

My Opinion:

I understand that a certain degree of system overbooking—especially at this price—is normal, but here I have the feeling that the systems are so full that even when all VMs are idle, the hosts are already at 50% capacity, leaving very little room for customers who want to use the server even to a limited extent.

Just open a ticket and they move your VPS to another host. Where benchmark for the second host?

I do no try to protect @DeluxHost, but my VPS's works fine and yabs is good (https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/comment/4494501#Comment_4494501 and https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/comment/4485399#Comment_4485399), the servers unavailable for 2-4 hours total per month, but for the price it's really not bad. As VPN it's really good.

Last month they faced with DDoS, that's why you have a problem with network.

    Thanks for the hint!

I'm not writing my review to denunciate the company - I just want to correct expectations regarding the service of the special offers - it is a low-budget offer.

You always get what you pay for - I wanted to clarify that it's less than I thought, and above all, explain why.

Clear expectations from my side to DeluxHost:

    • Be more communicative
    • Get your homeworks done (load balancing, pricing, expectation handling)

... and I will be one of the most fair customer, appriciating the service and pay my bills on time (... and for sure writing an update on my review if applicable).

Have a great day guys

  • Almost year I sitting here, I saw lots of crashed expectations. Lots of topics @DeluxHost is bad and etc. But when they start sale, all servers all the time sold out. VPS could be not good for you, but at the same time it works for me. I believe this about lucky, because your VPS power is depend from your neighbors. Maybe @DeluxHost could do their homework better for balancing VPS more stable, but we have what we have. Anyway if you have some problems with VPS, they trying to help you.

This is not about @DeluxHost you could faced with this everywhere.

Yes, it depends on who else is using the system. But let me reiterate: it's about expectations. I wasn't expecting a highly available virtual server, I wasn't expecting dedicated 10Gbps, 3 vCPUs, or dedicated hard drives—I was expecting a more stable, usable service. Simple as that.

My expectations weren't met—that's why I'm writing a review with positives and negatives.

But it doesn't happen to me everywhere, it happens specifically with DeluxHost. And again: that's why I'm writing a review with positives and negatives.

But I'm pleased to hear that DeluxHost seems to be able to offer a more stable service in general, and that you are one of DeluxHost's happy customers. Thanks for your feedback.

  • @wingmanDE, Thank you for the honest review. Sehr interessant und ehrlich 👍

I understand that @DeluxHost very busy with server optimization, but at least some comment would be great.

  • My Deluxhost experience started similar (I think it was their very first offer here)
During the first months it was useless aka idling with lots of cpu steal, but then surprisingly things went to normal, which - for the price - means amazing. So there is hope...

Been pretty stable for me recently.

edit: I don't even remember which plans I have or what nodes they're on. Between the dumb plan names and me not being able to find in virtfusion where the node names are exposed it's whatever.

Yeah, I think 3 days ago they announced that they startet a big offensive to rebalance their customers during the next time. I'm really excited and looking forward to it.

And one thing I want to mention again: Their support is really great for what was paid so far. That's outstanding.

  • I bought it last year, and my impression is that the CPU is extremely underpowered. As soon as it faces any load, it starts dropping packets frequently.

  • Hi guys,

I want to give an update in my experience.
To summarize it shortly: Nothing changed. The initial experience is still the same. They promissed a lot, but nothing changed during the last month.

    • Big downtimes
    • IPv6 stop working randomly
    • Massively underpowered
    • Biggest joke: Yabs of I series. Never saw something like this before ... (SSD ...)

They informed the customers that servers will be moved to new hardware and everything gets better. Nothing happened. No proactive update from their side for weeks - nothing.

    Conclusion:

I gave them a fair chance.
Stop using DeluxHost if you are interested in a service that have a higher uptime than your homelab connected through GSM to the internet. I cancled all services by today.

They call this products "Deals" but for me personally its "Scam".

  • One should NOT be using $9/year vps hoping to use it (unless flash deal with high config).

That's a novelty vps that you may have for "feel good" factor but except that, just let it acquire dust.

    Hi guys,

    Hello,

    I'm sorry to hear this.

But I'd just like to clarify a few points that seem quite important to me.

My logs don't show all the downtime you've experienced, or anything like that, despite the various issues that have plagued our services in the past, so I'm not sure how to help you on this front.

We also stated in the email we sent to our customers that moving from SSDs (as in your case) to high-performance NVMe, given the high number of customers, would take time, so I don't see anything unusual there either.

For the rest, if you think our services are a scam, you're free to go elsewhere, no one's forcing you to stay.
We'll certainly continue to improve in every way to provide a a good quality product, but it takes time, we don't have a magic wand.

For our part, if you'd like, the door remains open, and I'd like to try to help you, especially to understand all the downtime you've experienced.

Statuscake is monitoring from 3 diffrent sites. Only if all sites confirming that the host is down, the host will be marked as down. From the yabs you can see, that both hosts having simelar uptime. No reboot was initiated by me.

Gotcha - but the ticket I've raised after your mail is already 2 month old. In between there was no concrete time scheduling or simelar - to me as a customer it looks like a "Delaying technique". And having 2 servers that are nearly unusable for 3 month is not accaptable.

Fore sure - I also don't have a magic wand. But again: The way in which communication is handled does not lead to higher customer satisfaction, especially since I am apparently not the only one.

I think it's nothing to "understand better". It's just fixing the amount of overselling a host. Reduce the amount of power users or limit their ressources, especially the read and write operations of their disks. Just make your shared hosting offer usable for all your customer.

For me it's about doing "your homeworks". AI is able to write you a script that identifies customer with high IO of disks or high CPU usage and limit them for X hours to X percent or an other definied value - it's a small promt to put in to Sonnet and getting a script, that triggers your API of your hypervisor. There are so many possibilities helping you to get your system more stable.

But anyway, I just wanted to share my experience. I want to express that I'm talking about my personal experiences and I'm sure there are a lot of customers that are happy with your services so far.

One should NOT be using $9/year vps hoping to use it (unless flash deal with high config).

That's a novelty vps that you may have for "feel good" factor but except that, just let it acquire dust.

True, but there must be a difference between a 9$ VPS and a 41$ VPS - and the 41$ VPS is even more worst than the cheaper one. IMHO, it's just massive overselling of host systems.
