Had a dog that did exactly this, but with cockroaches. He would pin em down with his paws for sport. And let them go when he had his entertainment..miss him very much though.

Hard disagree. My cat did that once and the bugger managed to escape and hide behind the fridge and I never managed to retrieve him. I assume the cat did catch him again at some point, but it was pretty annoying.
My cat also once brought in a pigeon, but at least that was dead by the time I'd woken up. Still a real pain in the ass cleaning up all the feathers.
