that is a dedicated server, not a Virtual Dedicated Server

because you are paying for way more resources? VPS's are cheap because they run on shared resources

look for a VDS then, not a VPS?

VDS price are atrocious (except something like KS-A), that's why running multiple vps makes sense.

They are not so bad, for low core-count they sell on average at $5 / core, but above 4 cores the prices already drop to $2 / core for Ryzen and Epyc VDSs.

Oh yea i experienced same. lmao

Ive made some orders. One for example got a few TB of DDR4 RAM for a okayish price. Next day the order was cancelled, vendor saying the same bullshit of "wrong stock because we list our items at many places, we are sorry order refunded bla" and then jack up prices.

Almost verbatim a bunch of the responses I got. Guess I need to place many orders and then cancel the worst ones when it's time to pay since I placed my orders many places and had wrong purchasing stock.

Energy pricing is up 2-3x in the past few years in most places. RAM and NVMe pricing is up 500% in the past 3 months, and only going up more.

You're not going to see anything get cheaper anytime soon. Providers are struggling to maintain their existing pricing.

And hobbies are targeted even more. You can’t even build a PC for gaming anymore if you are budget conscious because ram alone is costing as much as a high end cpu or low end-mid range gpu. And ssds are slowly following suite. Prepare for a bumpy ride thanks to mindless AI push (not saying AI in itself is bad, the current “mindless” push is)

With all that said, I still think @FAT32 deserves a ton of praise for the tireless effort he singlehandedly does to get these events going just because of his pure love of the game. It's truly remarkable. Then he has dickhead providers asking him to make marketing puzzles with jacked mustached men mere hours before the event goes live on top of it all.

    I totally agree.

I believe if we all chip in, we can afford to buy some luxurious gift for @FAT32

How about a 4 GB RAM stick?

Should some big lads providers join in, it could be even a whooping 8 GB!!

We should probably get him a matched pair

This is LOW end. 64MB is all he needs. Let's make it 128MB

128 MB is quite a serious business:

    128 MB RAM VPS (OpenVZ)

that's why i only use netcup when i need CPU, their RS line product knock out 95%+ provider in the market, i wish they have servers in US west and Asia

Right, I hope they could expand once the AI boom RAM crunch is over. €8.78($10.5)for 4c/8g is nice, unlike online.net that sells 2c(Avoton)/2g for €4.99🤣. Conveniently, someone has servarica aff, 4c/16g for $8. I guess I will start researching VDS offers.
I admit that I don't pay attention to VDS pricing for a long time.

They're usually more than double the vps price. I'd rather spin more vps. But, this time I predict vertical scaling will be cheaper.

Right, I'll look into more hosts for less than $2/core. Perhaps I should wait for Christmas deals

I also agree a bit with that, now i prefer to spend a bit more just to not worry about overusage of cpu, especially game servers. I almost finished migrating my stuff from vps to vds or dedicated.
Thankfully it is an global average and can allow some long bursts depending on providers.
The only stuff i will keep on vps is website hosting and maybe small things that do not require high cpu.

  • Since I was only considering a few providers to begin with, I did walk away with deals I liked (even better than last BF in terms of sustainability imo). But having looked through the BF deals thread, I definitely sympathize with the commenters here.

    I bought.

    I loved.

    I basked in the afterglow.

I explained to my wife what all the strange PayPal charges on our credit card are.

I updated my grand VPS empire tracking system.

And then the sweetest moment of all...I idled.

    I bought 2x32GB Kingston DDR5 6000MHz CL30 6000MHz CL30 FURY Beast about 5 months ago, paid 2 290 SEK, the same sticks cost 8 190 SEK now. That's a 258 % increase. No wonder providers can't do lots of deals.

Thanks @barbaros for roasting my 32GB RAM and making me return it, because otherwise I would have bought the 64GB now :D

  • OpenAI is the only thing holding up the economy.

Sam Altman says OpenAI is about to go bankrupt.

Expect good RAM deals next year.

But you won't have a job.

Either the RAM was good (8GB or higher) but came with a measly 30GB or 50GB ssd. Da heck am I gonna do with that small space? BUT, 2TB storage deals came with, unbelievably, 500MB or 1GB RAM? What???

Have you seen how much RAM and storage prices have increased recently?

    TLDR;

Providers: You can't even imagine how expensive it is to operate at the moment. Its a post-apocalyptic AI venture cap wasteland, there is nothing left.

LET: Ok, hmm.. I see, but where deal?

Lowend offers are no longer low they either ultra low or highend.

Sad truth. If you can't buy extreme quantities (i.e. >1,500 HDDs per clip) the pricing is atrocious. I have to imagine I've likely pissed off a bunch of resellers/vendors at this point, but I can't stand having a price thinking the order is locked and then getting some kind of "we counted inventory wrong" BS message and see the same item listed for 10-20% higher an hour later. Then repeat. I know most of them won't be around in 6-12 months given how fly-by-night the 'reseller' market can be, but I'm definitely making a list.

Luckily between prebuys preparing for a huge build out, always jumping on deals when I see them, and being careful/having some reasonable vendors (+ ability to purchase bulk) we're making it happen. This would have been brutal if it was within the first 2 years of launching CB, so I have a lot of sympathy for providers in that position right now. Keep in mind even at the MW scale (single digits) when I'm negotiating new sites, even we're being told to piss off and what "market rate" is (aka: hyperinflated AI-slop-vendor rate burning VC capital that will be BK in 12 months). They're wrong and we always find what we need for healthy, long-term relationships, but this industry went from sleepy quiet engineer types to finance-AI-bro types overnight and it's still coping.

With all that said: costs on every imaginable portion of the industry are up. Hardware, telco, space, power, labor, you name it. I didn't follow the deals too closely to comment, and we can't really participate because I am shit at doing pre-sales. I'd rather just run something as soon as the product is ready (ideally by EOY, will be thread/specials), but I have to imagine until pricing settles down it's going to be hard to meet/exceed previous years deals. Just DDR4 alone is up to nearly $3.5-4/GB--my last bulk purchases of these identical sticks was approx $0.65-0.85/GB... in April/May of 2025. When hardware is trading like oil commodities, becomes very difficult to run a business.

    +1

basically it is struggle to buy components these days
I got the ram at the beginning of this craze and 2 weeks delay between getting initial quote and final price on the day of payment was 8k usd difference

Also good luck shopping for new space
in the past I was spammed always by datacenter sales to convince me to move
now you go to a DC with approx 0.5MW requirement and they return the call after 1 week !!!

  • That's true no great deals

If their financial is in bad shape how they're going to hire more people? And with grim market outlook, there's no justification to increase the headcount.
