Man, I just got the email from @host_c about "the road ahead". It saddens me to see what you people have to endure while offering cheap, good services.
I used the occasion to read back on all the last communications of HOST-C and they all read really disheartening. We have to add 2FA due to account abuse. We have to tighten traffic limits due to abuse. No account 2FA deactivation over email, due to abuse. This latest email just reinforces that.
I have quite a few servers on hand and had many more. Most come and go with the offers but my 5TB pioneer is the one where I feel the closest to an "emotional attachment". Way back in 2024, when they were made available to order, each batch came online at another weird hour of the day, in order to give everyone a chance. Back then, my 8 month old daughter didn't sleep well so I was anyways up at the most unusual times. So I tried my luck with each of these launch windows, but never managed to snag one. Every time, it meant waiting for a few days or weeks for the next hardware delivery and launch. After the last launch, I could only congratulate the lucky buyers in the thread. @host_c being the top dog he is, got in touch to offer me an unsold VPS.
I have since then moved houses and added a kid (it is now in the middle of the night and again my baby son doesn't want to sleep, so I'm again up on LET), but just the memory of sitting in our old apartment kitchen at 3 AM with a baby in the carrier, hitting F5 like crazy and having all registration form data ready to copy-paste... that was just a special, unique, memorable experience.
Do you all know the downside of the HOST-C Pioneer offer? It ruins all other offers, even the most ridiculous BF deals! Whenever a crazy good storage offer comes by, the urge to hit "buy" strikes me, until I calculate the per-TB-per-month cost and see that I always end up worse than with my Pioneer (who still has plenty of space free). Meanwhile, it has chugged along smoothly, faithfully storing my backups, media collection and everything else I ever wanted to "just throw somewhere to deal with later", always ready to accept more data.
But all good things must come to an end, and so will the best storage deal I ever managed to get. I'm happy that I at least have until 2027 before I have to find another home for my data.
So I want to write a @host_c appreciation post - thanks for being a top dog and reaching out, thanks for offering an amazing value deal for probably razor-thin margins (or not...), and thanks for not just deadpooling in the face of abusive users. We'll see what the road ahead brings.
An extremely unpleasant surprise
@philwatcher, unless I'm missing something from the email or elsewhere, I believe it's still possible to upgrade your Pioneer offer to the Gen 2 version. It is an increase in cost, and I'm not sure what you're paying for yours, but I upgraded mine and it increased from $45/y to $57/y. For me, that's still a really good deal for all the storage, plus the performance improvement is quite nice.

initially we gave ~1 moth for customers to upgrade to the Gen 2 versions of Pioneer and Nimitz, then we extended this till end of 2025. ( hoping the at least thoes that had a valid e-mail will stay onboard
). It kinda worked....

I actually missed it more then some might think, but there was no sense to throw in services while also doing a shift in direction, it would have created a bigger confusion that is already in place.

According to the mail, Pioneer 5 TB is getting decommissioned. It was already informed before so I move to the alternate option of migrating to the SkyCluster 5 TB.
Now, since the mail says Pioneer 5 TB is getting decommissioned, then is it only for Pioneer or the SkyCluster too (since it is just a Pioneer upgrade after all).
It is only the old Pioneer getting decommissioned.

It is a manual process, so it will take a while.
Also since during the migration CPU Generation changes, these will all be offline migrations.
