Providers: Why no Proton email addresses?

I love my proton email account. I use the cloud for storage and other proton add ons. Why do I get a notice from some providers that this email account is disallowed. Is it a favorite of scammers or something? If that isn't it, please post the reason.

  • Probably because lot's of scammers use it. I have seen only a few providers that banned proton.

  • Well, for the same reason that other privacy services are banned.

The main reason (I think) for the vast majority is that people who use this type of email usually engage in some kind of common abuse that is not tolerated. So, as Proton does not require a mobile phone number to be associated with it, this service is common and used for various types of abuse, which may even be ‘legal’ but are not permitted by the vast majority. For this reason, it is blocked. With Gmail, among others, it is more difficult because it requires a mobile phone number, among other things, so the account seems more ‘legitimate’ when purchasing a service.

Please note that there are also Gmail accounts that engage in abuse. That is also clear.

This does not mean that there are no people using Proton services correctly and without any kind of abuse; obviously, there are.

It is not only these, but temporary emails are also usually blocked. Perhaps by anti-spam and anti-fraud filters that block emails that do not appear to be ‘secure’? Here it depends on how it is done.

I may be wrong, but generally when there is privacy there is always blocking. We can take the example of Mullvad, where the vast majority of VPNs like Mullvad have requests marked as ‘Fraud’ or ‘Suspicious’ due to the reputation of the IPs, but that does not mean that everyone is doing this.

Biggest problem is probably that you can get free email accounts at proton. And @sandoz explained the real problem behind that with proton for providers really well.

    probably the reply will be:

  • i totally agree with @sandoz he get a point in privacy and anti spam&fraud

  • just use a different host, dictating your email provider is ridiculous.

  • Reviewing all the answers, I guess it once again goes under the heading, a few ruin it for everyone.

    Yes, the eternal curse.

This. Providers have every right to dictate the criteria used by their customers, and customers have every right to choose providers they want. Just move on.

Still sad if you really like your current provider. But I guess it's more protons fault, since they don't do enough against this. Sad to see them going in this direction, they had potential.

  • Try other Proton domains. @pm.me is free, @protonmail.ch is paid.

No problem here. Lots of people use Proton. Real criminals/scammers don't use Proton anyway, pain in the ass to sign up for Proton now days (Edit: I think they require a backup email to use to create an account, so you're linked to another mail provider regardless.)

Gmail does not require a phone number to register. Only if you're registering from a hosting/flagged IP/range.

There is no direct correlation between using Proton Mail and being an abuser. We have dozens of customers using Proton and there is not a single issue. It seems that the fraud rules of your desired provider may be hovering a little on the conservative side...

If you’re a paid user I’d just use your own domain. Then it’s easier to move to another service in the future.

I would discriminate against aol and Yahoo addresses.

  • Blocking an entire email provider like Proton is way too heavy handed. There are much more accurate ways to prevent fraud. If a company doesn't accept Proton email addresses (and I've seen a few), I just move on to another company.

Proton Drive is godawful for Linux users.

  • I have expereinced it too... but not with any hosts atleast as of now. Some neo banks straight up ask to login with gmail, literally no other options.

  • because proton does not support native emailprotocols.

  • Which stupid provider does that? Name and shame.

  • Use Gmail instead, like all the scammers and spammers.

Providers don’t have the balls to block Google.

Best if you ask them for a reason and see how they themselves have no idea why in most cases.

You can do this. Find some free or disposable email address, gmail is easy to find and rarely blocked. Register and activate then change your email address to proton in the panel. If changing your email address does not work send them a GDPR request for data correction to change your email address to proton. Assuming GDPR is applicable.

  • Interesting. I didn't know that. These days, I work on Macs mostly, enjoying Tahoe 26. I use it share files with my web developer. It works for us well.

  • This has been my experience, both that gmail has the most scammers, and that is so because Google which IS evil, seems to regard that as bug not a feature. In my work email, I get tons of fake Capital one and Amex phishing emails, but all the great offers from the proverbial Nigerian prince come from gmail.

  • Ha, ha. There was a time when this would have been first response. Older now, not sure any wiser. But, I wonder if I ask a question like this in the provider channel some providers might see it and take note. Probably a vain hope. But, I just move on now. But, I like to ask questions when I don't understand.

  • Proton heavily utilized for scams, fraud. Pre-blocking is native defence
